Major Confused: New Backup Ext HD does strange things

I think I have narrowed down my problem. My New 8TB external drive is starting to drive me bonkers. Something I didn't pay close enough attention to when I ordered it from Amazon. I was looking for a higher storage capacity HD. I figured I would not be getting to capacity for several years with 8TB (7.26) formatted. It is a Seagate "Expansion" Drive with Backup SW and Data Recovery software Included. I think at the time I ordered this it was "a good price". But I have not been using this HDD for that purpose. I have just been using this as a regular storage HDD.
-
I had been transferring my files from a older ext HDD for several days without a glitch. Then weirdness set in. I was starting to transfer so Music files over but I thought I would copy the name of the file and make a new folder on the new drive. I rename the file folder and hit enter key. The folder never appeared. So I thought I'd miss hit so I created a new FF. That folder disappeared also. I said to myself WTF! After a few minutes the file folders did appear but instead of my new name it just showed the name "New Folder" and "New Folder(2). Okay scratch head time. The only way I could get W11 or File Explorer to show the correct filename was for me to end that session, and start anew. This time it showed the name that I had changed it to.

I was also noticing not all the files I had transferred were being displayed until a set amount of time, and not after transfer was completed.

So after a warm restart several times all the files were accounted for as long as I quit File Explorer and restarted it again. I thought maybe the computer was getting to warm so I shut it down for 20 minutes and rebooted but the problem continued. I thought give it an overnight rest and see if that resolved.

So this afternoon I was transferring music files from a thumb drive to the new ext HDD. About Half the music files would show up in the file folder and I would wait a few moments but they would not show up until I would exit Explorer then go back in again. So it looks like the drive is hiding files or Win11 is major malfunctioning.

It could be the File Explorer refresh bug. Enough threads on that in here.

Have a look at this thread, note post #3. There is a list of options to try in there:

I happen to have the same drive, now for about 2 years maybe more and have never had any problems with it
of any kind.
Did this happen after the last Preview update?
Have you tried another USB port ?
Did you change the Policies in Device Manager?
How fast is the data transfer?
This is what I get with the Policies changed in Device Manager
By changing the Policies, you will have to use the Safely Remove Hardware icon on taskbar.
The USB port used is a 3.2 Gen 2 and it's a 2.88GB folder.

Don't reach any conclusions about these problems until you press the F5 key [or right-click, Refresh] after the changes/transfers concerned.
It certainly sounds like a typical report of a refresh problem.
This problem will come & go of its own accord. If you happen to have sung an aria just before the problem goes away for a while, do not start believing that arias are a solution.

warm restart
shut it down
overnight rest
exit Explorer
The F5 key [or right-click, Refresh] will achieve what you want. The other steps you took are not necessary.

I wasted a month of my life chasing solutions to the Refresh problem without success.
I do not believe there is any solution to this problem [which has existed since the last century].
And I'm sorry, Antspants, but those suggested fixes are as ineffective as all other suggested fixes for the Refresh problem.

Some said the registry worked for them.
Every PC setup is different, and one file could cause it to go bung. Take me for instance, I haven’t seen the refresh issue for a few years.

Okay my problem I resolved or it solved itself. If I had just thought about it instead of reacting to the problem. I think to some extent I was tired and over reacted.
If I go to properties pulled down menu and compare that to the drive I copied from all the files where there. Whether it displayed all the files during the transfer phase or afterward when the screen was refreshed or that session was over and I started a new session. Everything is there so that was my concern. It is just is a quirk of that new drive. Windows 11 doesn't act that way or display files that way on the "C" Drive or any of my thumb drives just that New Seagate Expansion drive. Thanks for all your input and trying to help.
I have been working on Windows based computers since 1984. I got started with computers while I was working for RadioShack and going to Graduate School. I don't have a degree in Computer anything but I have been dealing with Hardware and Software problems for a long time. This was baffling and as noted previously I was tired. I had probably been up to 19 hours.

Thank you for that shortcut that sure beats doing what I was doing. So there is a known problem with Windows 11 or File Explorer Refresh?
The headscratcher for me is that I had never ran into this problem or quirk before. It only happened when it involved this "New HDD"
Maybe it is because of a recent update to the system via the Mother Ship (Microsoft). I am convinced that not all of their fixes "are fixes". They seem to fix things that are not broken. I may say the same thing about Apple if I used their hardware and software. There is so much proprietary stuff with them that I have always stayed clear of them. To much control IMHO.

You mentioned changing Policies which I interpret as using Windows Pro. My current Operating system is Windows 11 Home. I do not think they allow you to change any policies with that OS! But thanks for your information. Getting an other opinion or adding another brain on these problems is always a plus. Some committee things do work!

I have 2 x 4TB USB drives connected my main computer plus a NAS drive with 2 x 4TB drives running as RAID 1 for 4TB capacity. Not seeing any issues with transferring files back and forth from any computer connected to the Router either Wired or Wireless in accessing the folder on the NAS that I Map in File Explorer nor on the 2 USB drives or other USB drives. My latest 'toy' is a Samsung EVO 970 1TB 2280 in a USB case, more portable than the WD My Passport.

So there is a known problem with Windows 11 or File Explorer Refresh?
There has been a known problem with Windows File explorer Desktop Refresh since the last century.
I sometimes see people, like you, refer to other folders having the problem as well but comments are normally about the Desktop.

What Flashhorn might do with policies in Pro, you and I might do with direct Registry edits in Home.
There's no great difference between the two other than convenience.

I had not seen the Refresh problem until about 2011 [Windows 7].
Now I reboot every morning in the hope of avoiding it but it still re-appears late in the day if I've been busy on the computer [particularly if I've slept & woken the computer several times during the day].

All the best,
Denis

Welcome to ElevenForum.

It's really worth making time to browse through the ElevenForum Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every ElevenForum page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the ElevenForum Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- ElevenForum tutorials are also listed at Tutorials and there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
- You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,
Taskbar setup site:elevenforum.com
- [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of ElevenForum webpages does automatically]

For MSOffice problems search in and, if necessary, create threads in the TenForums MSOffice section [ElevenForum does not have one].

You mentioned changing Policies which I interpret as using Windows Pro.
Glad you solved or came to an understanding of your situation.
As for the policies in Device Manager, anyone either on home
or Pro can change those policies regarding write caching on
"external" HDDs / SSds / NVMe drives and even on pen drives
or flash drives. It will boost the speed of the transfers but, at one
point in the transfer, you will loose some of the speed if the files
are very big because the buffer is full and the drive has to catch up.
Installed HDDs /SSDs / NVMes do not have this policy change
available to them.

Okay thanks for the advice from everyone. I will never be an expert with computers. I will only know solutions to problems I have encountered and then I will hunt and peck until I find a solution. If I think it is a problem worth throwing out to the Computer Geniuses (here) then I will post the problem here. I figured this one out before I came back but I learned a few things just reading your comments. As far a s the totality of the Eleven Forums. I usually am not going to search the whole forum for anything/everything. Even though I am a 69 year old retiree I would get bored doing that.
I do have other interest. Reading, playing music and watching youtube videos. But If I run into a problem then I will search high and low to try to resolve the issue.
