For the fourth time in 2025, Steam has been infected by an alleged malware attack. This time it's managed to steal $150,000 in crypto before being taken down, according to investigators.
According to BleepingComputer, security researchers identified BlockBlasters as malware that seeks out and steals Steam login information along with other info. This was apparently used to find associated cryptocurrency wallet accounts and drain them. The operators seem to have targeted streamers and Twitter users specifically known to be invested in cryptocurrency with a spearphishing campaign.
Valve has not commented on the investigation. This is the fourth high-profile example of malware making its way onto Steam and being downloaded by the general public in 2025, following similar incidents in July, March, and February.

I know I'm old and out of sync with younger generations (and some not so young) of gamers, so bear with me before laughing me off this thread.
Will someone please help me to understand. WHY do people stay with a platform that doesn't seem to have any filtering or security in place to protect its members? Are there not other platforms for gamers to use? Do gamers consider their gaming more important than their security? I know the gaming community is huge. Looks to me like they would have enough clout in numbers to demand better if they left Steam in droves. If they did, Valve would do something about it. If their users don't demand better, they won't get better.

The Steam games cannot be player without Steam. Even old Windows XP games are tricky to make them work in Windows 10/11, so Steam is an easy way to play them. However, they should keep Windows Defender or other antivirus updated and WATCH what they click on. Clicking anywhere just to get rid of an annoying popup window makes you very vulnerable to malware because you might give admin access to unknown code without realizing.
