Meta launching new communities features on Threads

 Meta Newsroom:

Takeaways

  • Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, a milestone that reflects our commitment to building alongside the communities that define the app by listening to their feedback and prioritizing what matters most.
  • To celebrate this milestone, we’re graduating communities out of beta and launching a suite of highly-requested features including custom icons, expanded champion recognition, and more.
  • We’re also introducing Your Algo: a personal setting that lets you control what you see in your feed and builds on the Dear Algo feature we launched in February.
Today we’re announcing that Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, a milestone that reflects people’s desire for a public space built around conversation. This growth is driven by communities — groups of people showing up around the conversations they care about, from books to basketball to parenting to music. Those communities built Threads into what it is and now, we’re adding new tools to help them become even more meaningful and dynamic.

New

Our communities feature has been one of the fastest-growing features on Threads since it launched last year. Today, we’re graduating communities out of beta and delivering some of the most-requested features as we invest in the people and communities that got us here:
  • Communities Hub: We’re making it easier to find and switch between communities by adding them to the main menu to the left of your feed.
  • Community Icons: Communities now have their own distinct visual identities, making them easier to spot and recognize across Threads.
  • Community Progress: You can now see when a topic is close to becoming a community — and what you can do to help it get there.
  • Community Champions: We’re awarding community champion status to more people across communities.
  • Local Communities: We’re making communities local, starting with native-language tags in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

And in the coming weeks, we’ll be expanding Live Chats to more communities — with co-hosting and the ability to quote moments to your feed.

Giving

Earlier this year, we introduced Dear Algo, which lets you tell the Threads algorithm what you want to see more or less of. Now, based on your feedback, we’re introducing Your Algo, a complement to Dear Algo that lets you privately control what conversations you see in feed.

With Your Algo, you can tell Threads you want to see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts: one, three, or seven days. Only you will be able to see your requests, and you can manage both Dear Algo and Your Algo in one unified hub.

Your Algo UI

Your Algo is rolling out today in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

Today’s updates are just the start. We’ll keep updating Threads based on your feedback to make sure it’s the best place to find your community and take part in the conversations that matter to you.
