Microsoft Authenticator Enables Number Matching to Block MFA Fatigue Attacks



 Microsoft Entra Blog:

Beginning May 8, 2023, number matching is enabled for all Authenticator push notifications. As relevant services deploy, users worldwide who are enabled for Authenticator push notifications will begin to see number matching in their approval requests. Users can be enabled for Authenticator push notifications either in the Authentication methods policy or the legacy multifactor authentication policy if Notifications through mobile app is enabled.

I've always wondered why some of my accounts had it and some didn't. At least now they will be consistent.

What I wonder about is, why sometimes approving Microsoft account login has it, while other times it does not

Yes, for example, trying to look at my bitlocker keys stored on the account gets the following prompt, with no number shown. In some other workflow (not sure which, but same account), gets a prompt with 3 numbers to select.
