Windows 11 preview update KB5120998 removes WMIC, a command-line tool used since Windows XP for admin and automation tasks.

With the latest Windows 11 preview update (KB5120998), Microsoft is finally bidding farewell to a tool that has been part of the operating system since Windows XP: the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC). By removing is making it optional or not available at all? Usually Winaero comes with some trick to "retro-fit" old tools in Windows 11. Just check his website and he might upload one sometime later.

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

Has been disabled by default since January 2024.

Removing it is a good step as you can just use Powershell.

That's a strong reason not to install this update and all newer that bundle it.

He means any newer that also removes this feature. You cannot avoid updating forever but you can pause Windows Update until Winaero or someone else finds a workaround.

If you need vivetool or other things to enable / disable Windows features then your system IMHO alrady has problems. Any "enablement" of Windows features should be able to be done from entirely within Windows itself.

The replacement is Powershell and people just need to learn how to use it.

Unless you're personally running WMIC commands (by hand), you're not going to miss it. WMIC.exe is gone, but the underlying WMI API is still there for PowerShell and any compiled executable to access.

Where you're going to be in trouble is legacy installer scripts, but usually they're written in batch. The good thing is batch files are easier to track down the WMIC commands inside them and have someone tell you how to replace those lines with an equivalent PowerShell one-line command.

I don't have the time to learn PS and it has never been part of any job in product management. But now I subscribe to Claude AI ($20/month) and Claude knows PS very well. Issue sometimes is when Claude wants to use one of the Office com objects. They can be tricky and Claude needs to revise its original approach
