To be fair... the iT world (office work in particular) - is supersaturated with parasites. Be it cause of nepotism, bad management who hires so many incompetent employees - that it takes 5 (if not more) - to do the work of one who's actually fitting for that job (and that at relaxed rate). I worked in multiple places like this myself or had a job there and always find it hard to believe - that so many call that a workplace or that this people are getting paid to do what they do (professional time wasters). Sure, some places had not very nice salaries - so at least those had some excuse. But then there's the big guys/corporations - where you're actually getting a decent pay. And again - 5 people would manage the work of 1 - while slacking off even procrastinating 80% of the time - "acting" like they're working only when a manager was around.

Big projects getting dropped (not profitable enough or lack of funds to further support their development) - was the only time this made sense (at such times even hardworking people lost their jobs).

This is a tragedy..

Very true.

Employee filtering after years of mismanagement... Very important. I can imagine so many in this pool of people have been coasting in their jobs getting paid lots to do very little and have absolutely no positive impact to the company.
