Microsoft moves to new Windows development cycle with major release every three years, feature drops in between


Microsoft is shifting to a new engineering schedule for Windows which will see the company return to a more traditional three-year release cycle for major versions of the Windows client, while simultaneously increasing the output of new features shipping to the current version of Windows on the market.

The news comes just a year after the company announced it was moving to a yearly release cadence for new versions of Windows. According to my sources, Microsoft now intends to ship “major” versions of the Windows client every three years, with the next release currently scheduled for 2024, three years after Windows 11 shipped in 2021.

This means that the originally planned 2023 client release of Windows (codenamed Sun Valley 3) has been scrapped, but that's not the end of the story. I’m told that with the move to this new development schedule, Microsoft is also planning to increase the output of new features rolling out to users on the latest version of Windows.

Microsoft already had been muddying the waters around how and when it planned to bring new features to Windows. Now it sounds as if quarterly new feature 'Moments' updates between 'major' Windows client releases could become the newest servicing roadmap.

Usually they keep the requirements really low but will it run reasonable on this specs. Highly not!

Especially since core keeps telling me all of my Logitech drivers are problematic on one machine and not the other.

had multiple insider builds and i had issue not being able to upgrade window the updates they just reset and it just says download and install again in a loop when they come to 100% tried everything from resetting windows update to manually installing through DISM had enough of in place upgrades when updates come so i just went to previous stable build sadge

When I have problems that bad, I generally do a clean install to get rid of any "cooties" that come along for the ride. Most of the time I don't have any problems.

Stable build funny enough works fine with updates i just dont want install everything from zero.. wish there is a feature for restoring apps on clean install or app that can do that..

The Insider Release Preview Channel is the most stable build, and has the advantage that you can step out of receiving Insider updates and wait for the public build to catch up and overtake you.

The Dev Channel is the least stable and may test feature that never make it into the stable RTM build. There is always a risk of needing to start over with a clean install.

There are apps that can save and transfer your installed apps to a new machine, but they are invariably paid-for apps, or free but limited to moving just a few programs. I don't use them, preferring to make sure I keep at least one system image I can go back to if needed.

Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

that preview builds were all in place upgrades from 22622.169 to 440.. and always had issues installing updates and it was some generic error that everyone has which is fixed by resetting windows update but it just didnt work for me.. even installing SSU and CAB through DISM gave same error with SFC and DISM not giving any errors from scanhealth/restorehealth to component cleanup it was weird

Actually what was wrong with issuing SP's (Service packs) every so often -- usually worked and was often a lot easier for updating systems that hadn't been regularly maintained than going through the myriad of KB updates - some of which can (and do fail) leaving systems often in unstable states and unable to update properly later due to regression problems etc in missing previous updates.

Quick answer - noting. But Windows 11 was released how many years ago.

Wikipedia says "Windows 11 is the latest major release of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system, released on October 5, 2021." But development through insiders much earlier.
