Solved Microsoft's POP3 email problem

Microsoft wants EVERYONE to use IMAP for Email.
Bring up Outlook 365, add an email account,
and Outlook will automatically configure it as an IMAP account,

However, try to establish a POP3 email account...

Everything seems to be going as expected,

but inevitably,

and what options do I have now?

I have never managed to get anything useful out of a "Microsoft Community"!
HAS ANYONE SUCCESSFULLY ESTABLISHED A POP3
EMAIL ACCOUNT USING OUTLOOK 365 IN WIN11?

Have you been into ‘control panel’ do you have a ‘mail’ icon in there? If so, open it and use the advanced settings.
I only have office 2021. I create/add & setup my outlook email through Mail in control panel.

I'm using a POP (Bellsouth) account in Outlook 365 running under Windows 10. I'm sure it would also run in Win 11. Just some suggestions:

In Gmail account settings, confirm POP is enabled; perhaps you also need to enable 2-step verification and set up an App password.
Then delete the POP account in Outlook, close Outlook, and then add it in again manually using Control Panel/Mail (Microsoft Outlook). Restart Outlook.

Went through control panel as recommended. Then manually completed the rest:
Outgoing Server: My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
Advanced: Incoming server (POP3) [995] ...requires an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS)
Outgoing server (SMTP)): [465] Use the following type of encrypted connection (SSL/TLS)

Never set up 2-step verification for email nor an App password.

There is already another email address of Type Microsoft Exchange. would that affect my ability to insert a POP3 account?

You need an app password setup, nothing else will sort it.

actually, that address seems to be dead. Maybe you need to be logged in to view it, as mentioned to you in the past, no way in hell I’d use google email. So maybe try the address

I'm doing something I don't normally do, and haven't done on this forum. I have spent hours reading about and consulting youtubes about and I still don't understand:

I don't understand app passwords, why they're used, why they're necessary, or how to do them.

but right now I need from you THE ANSWER.

I need desperately to get Outlook up and running with my email address as a POP3 account.

PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO CREATE AN APP PASSWORD THAT WILL ALLOW ME TO GET OUTLOOK RUNNING ON THIS COMPUTER!

I'm standing by..............................

I'm on this address and things still aren't making any sense. (Sentences with double negatives ["Tip: Don’t create an app password unless the app or device you want to connect to your account doesn’t have “Sign in with Google.”"] etc...) The article all seems to have to do with Google Accounts (I didn't know I had one!) and 2-step verification ("If you use 2-Step-Verification and get a "password incorrect" error when you sign in, you can try to use an app password.")

I don't understand what Google has to do with App passwords; with Microsoft programs; etc. I FEEL I'm getting embroiled in two companies I disdain...

All I want to do is get Outlook 365 running...

Watch this video to learn how to generate an App password. Then use the generated password as your POP account password when configuring your account in Outlook 365 using Control Panel/Mail.

I'm not technical enough to explain why they are needed other than certain mail apps (outlook desktop being one) do not support multi factor authentication.

I went back into Outlook and tried to set up the POP account, and again:

What the hell does Google have to do with Microsoft!!!
What..................does Microsoft have to do with Google!!!

Looks like you've used App passwords in the past. If you don't recognize any of them I would delete them all and generate a new one. If you're still having issues and have a Microsoft 365 subscription, I would contact Microsoft Support.

I couldn't delete them, they were "revoked"!
OK here goes...

We couldn't log on to the incoming (POP) server. Please check your
email address and password and try again.

If you now have a good app password from Google, then I would reconfigure Outlook afresh.

Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Select and remove your outlook profile. Close Control Panel.
rename outlook data folder [C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook] to something like OutlookOld.
rename outlook data folder [C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook] to something like OutlookOld.
Go back to Control Panel/Mail and configure your email account using the app password.
If no joy, contact MS support.

Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to you...

Diane's upstairs watching Jonathan Winters on her computer and...suddenly up on the screen pop up all these windows having to do with--it must be--the app password. I entered mine and the windows kept on popping up...and now I'm not sure that I haven't screwed up her email address. I captured the images but am unable to send them to my account...things are REALLY messed up...

This is the window that keeps popping up on Diane's computer. I filled inmy password and now I'm getting messages saying the password's been changed on her accounts (the app app passwords that I deleted??? - and can't get back) andon my account. Going downstairs to show you one of those warnings.

Also can't get rid of the small pictures of the window beneath this message...that disclosemy email address!!

The windows still (even after a restart) popping up on Diane's computer.
I can't seem to stop them. For some reason only the smtp one is coming up now.
I'm using SnagIt, a different screen capture program (than Win/Shift/S)

I don't know what Start Over means...(now she's "very concerned")

I don't think I can bring this up with Microsoft or Google:
- Microsoft, I can't explain it to.
- Google, can never be contacted and I can't explain it to.

and, no, the solution to this is NOT to make my email IMAP!

I must've dismissed (using X, [OK], and [Cancel]) the window over 200x!

Now the pop and the smtp windows are both (one at a time) but both on screen at once, coming up.

The email address on both is mine (no longer Diane's) -- more smtp.gmail.com than pop.gmail.com.
I'm going to restart ALL THE COMPUTERS and see what happens!
