Here's a trick to stop MS Telemetry.

Go to your host file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\" Create a copy of the host file in that directory. Now move the host file to the desktop and open the host file in notepad. Copy all the IP's starting from "0.0.0.0 in.appcenter.ms" In the below quote. Past that into the host file then Click file and save. Now move the host file back to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\" That's it! Here's a video that'll walk you through it. Start it at 5:56

    YA! This the old backup. In case things go south. It'll give me access to everything I need.
Just a note: You don’t need to open it on your desktop.

  • Make sure the host file properties isn’t set to Read Only.
  1. In your taskbar or start menu search function, type Notepad to find it. Right-click on Notepad and select Run as administrator.
  2. Once in Notepad, go to File -> Open. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc and make sure to have All Files selected (at the bottom of Notepad) to find/see the Hosts file
  3. Now you can edit the Hosts file. Open the Hosts file.

You might need some "local" DNS resolves etc / Intranet / specific proxy IP's or whatever. Most people though shouldn't probably need to do anything with this file.

Unlike a lot of things e.g house clearance when you can say "When in Doubt --chuck it out" my experience with Windows is if you don't know what its for then just leave it alone -- of course there are those who get pleasure out of breaking their systems -- but I'm not one of them.

If I delete all my cookies, I find some websites won't work because the "accept cookies?" dialogue is blocked and never appears. I have to make sure the browser is not blocking ads/referrers. So messing with the Hosts file will probably 'break' something in the future.
Perhaps OP has some activities he wants to keep private? ;-)

If people are that paranoid then either they shouldn't use "The public Internet". And if they want to use alternative "sources" then don't use Windows.

I'm amazed at how much paranoia there is these days -- with the amount of sheer data being generated around the globe every second (and increasing) it needs sophisticated (and VERY sophisticated A.I) to "Catch a person of Interest",

Titling this thread "Modifying Your Host File" is a bit misleading, something more appropriate like "Blocking MS telemetry" would have made it stand out more.

I'm not bothered by this at all, and disabling telemetry would likely cause problems for Windows Insiders
Also blocking Location would stop things like MS Rewards from working

The telemetry doesn't bother me.... it monitors processes related to updating Windows programs.

Microsoft collects the data, analyses it and decides what needs to be fixed or improved.

Windows is stable but there are going to be bugs.

You know I've read all the negatives and one positive on my post and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not paranoid. You call me that just because I blocked MS from collecting my private data. If you think that's just OK! Then your naive.

@Lance1
i have had no problems with the list added to the hosts file all is working normally.
Windows Defender did pick up the change on a scan where AVG internet security didnt, i just marked it ignore in Windows Defender.
i also use Cloudflare with the DNS encrypted in network settings.

there is a script Debloat Windows 10/11 which i also ran from GitHub which also disables telemetry. with both that and the hosts file i dont think anything would be able to get through to MS. i also use a local Admin account and according the MS i have no systems detected on their list but the system is activated within the settings menu. also this Windows install was done with a Rufus install USB.

just as an add on .. i also have MS Edge uninstalled and totally removed with Edge, Edge update and Edge Webview locked out via the registry and firewall but i have no doubt that it will reappear on a system update. these are my own personal choices.

thank you again and best wishes. Steve ..

You know I've read all the negatives and one positive on my post and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not paranoid. You call me that just because I blocked MS from collecting my private data. If you think that's just OK! Then your naive.
Seriously it's only interested in what you eat for breakfast and where you buy take-aways from and maybe the size of your clothes. Most of this is collected for user convenience. If you are that worried then maybe you should leave computers alone. Other data is collected for reliability and bug tracing purposes.

P.S. if you have Microsoft office you have more digging to do.

@Lance1
I don't think you are paranoid, but I do think you worry too much. When I set up Windows I do restrict the telemetry to essential, but only to reduce any uploads because they severely affect my download speed. I also stopped OneDrive for the same reason. I'm happy with my monthly image backups.
