MS paint changes in Windows 11

Hi. In W10 could use paint. I pick on the drawing (pen) tool pick the colour and size of the pen similar to the size of a font. I can't do this in W11. If I pick up the pen tool, I can draw lines totaly free hand in any colour but can not select the size of the pen. can use the brush but this gives me only a selection of fancy brushes with tapering ends. Stll no size adjustment. I could scribble an arrow using a couple of lines but now I have to pic from only 4 arrows with 4 directions. Verry nice looking but fixed in a MS pointer shape apearance. Michelangelo could not have worked with the new MS paint.

There should be a slider at the left of the workspace to alter the size.

Without not knowing:-
* What version of Windows 11
* What version of MS Paint.

But on the version MS Paint I have, there is a scroll bar on the LHS of the program screen, moving this up or down will change the pixel size of what tool you are using.

No need to use the modern Microsoft Paint app. You can install the "traditional" desktop Microsoft Paint application, Google for Winaero Paint. I use that because someone thought it was nice to move the save icon on the right side and I lose time moving the mouse to the left to crop the image and then to the right to save. Using the old desktop version all controls are on the left and fastest and easier to use.

Don’t you yourself often have multiple versions of software at once? Office? Not sure that equates to a mess

Is there even more than one version of Paint in Windows 11? I thought it was just updated, full stop. I don’t know.

That's the old Paint from Windows 10 installed on 11. It is not available by default, as is not available the old calculator from Windows 7 which is much nicer than the ugly modern app. Also its size is reasonable the new calculator app is too big and hides other windows, not practical when working and want to calculate something.

I was referring to more than one version of Paint installed by default. I doubt it.

Other software though. There are softwares/apps installed in Windows that double up. Like Media Player.
There is Media Player & Windows Media Player. Until recently, Films & TV also acted like the pre mentioned.
But I can be confident in saying, removing one from the OS, is in no way going to make Windows perform any better. And one never has to see it if they don’t ever call on it.

Sometimes though, Microsoft leaving two versions of a software could be a good thing for transitional reasons. I don’t know.

This is all, as per usual, just my opinion. As I always like to mention.

I was thinking more of old and new Notepad, old and new Outlook, Control Panel vs Settings, etc...

Yeah, stuff everywhere mate.

But I think some of this is worth it for transition.

Notepad for instance. Some members don’t like the new Notepad regardless that they’re informed how to make it work like the original. Theres only been one Outlook for a while, (new) the other Outlook (App) is no more? Mail as we’ve been seeing more comment on lately, is already being removed pre the December date warning.

As for control panel, I am glad for the moment it’s still available. I think by them removing it we will be losing some methods to manipulate Windows. I know some smart person will tell us how to get around it though. It feels like losing an old friend.

Thanks Mooley. I didn't see the left slider. Another MS change. As for which version of paint. It cam shipped with W11 so that is the version isn't it? There is no Help -> About -> version on paint. But no sorted. Thanks.

Just to add. in W10 there was a search facility in windows explorer with a drop down calendar. MS saw it was popular so they scrapped it now you have to manualy type datediff: date ... date.

But like I said, we don’t see any of this stuff unless we chose to call on it.

I think the person most likely to suffer will be Brink because of all the tutorials he is constantly faced with changing.

@antspants I didn't install it alongside the new Paint app the Winaero way, I had saved it from Windows 10,made it as a portable app and saved it in my tools folder. I was still able to make it default for .png file by right clicking on a png file>open with>choose another app>scroll down to choose an app on my Pc and point it to the portable executable.
Using it as portable, it can no way interfere with the new Paint, is not in the start menu, and doesn't have to be uninstalled.I love portable apps.
I could even pin it to my start menu or taskbar.
Note to anyone else running across this thread. This if for English(US) version. If you want to run the old paint as portable rather than install it per the Winaero method listed above, and you use another language, you have to rename the folder named EN-US to your language and replace the .mui file inside that folder to the one of the language you use. @Bree post #3 here tell you how. Also note: My finding found one has to use 5.1 or earlier version of Old paint in this way. Windows 11 will squawk with any version later than that..

Actually you can use as many languages as you want (or have an .mui for). Just put each language-specific .mui in its own sub-folder. Here I have US and UK English for my Wordpad (saved in advance of its removal in 24H2).

What I don't understand is why MS feels that it's better to make you go through more steps to get something done than what it use too take.
