Hi there.

Forgive me for this what seems to me a rather ... i dunno. beginner question. i fancy I as fairly knowledgeable about it in general, having been sitting in front of a monitor since monitors were monochromatic.

I dunno. The world's crazy anymore. You never know when reality might slip out, and it's like. What? twilight zone for real. So sometimes, I just wanna touch base and make sure it's not like that movie about the virus for 28 days.

Like this:
Check out this movie. Sorry it's probably a big file. Doesn't matter to me. Probably takes forever. I dunno. I paid like $125 for 12 mos and "unlimited", so ... i don't expect much.

But here's the screenrec: https://whatsonyourbrain.com/adb/assets/explorer_GSFl092cMS.mp4
What you see there is my "Downloads" folder. Nothing special. Just going to "Downloads" like my mom might. ha. my mom.
anyway.

Is that not how the "search" (from folder like i do there) is supposed to function? Because i know for sure there is a file in there that will match "SCP", but sure enough the "Search" haha... says nope.
Windows is Gaslighting me! WTH

I just don't get the search terms. How is that supposed to be used? Doesn't make sense.
Okay, so...
If the Downloads folder is NOT indexed (which, why wouldn't it be, but... whatever...)

i mean. E.g. using WSL find, it would take a fraction of a second.
yet. this tells me there are NO files matching "scp".

what am i missing. because
😢

... thoughts, and looking at that movie.

There must be a filter set somewhere. but where?
like excluding ... i dunno even know what criteria.
or a 3rd party app maybe?

Looking at the slow indexing literally hurts my eyes. MS has tendency to overthink everything, putting various filters to help the user, in the end making it unusable, but generally MS apps are like half baked cookies, there is always something missing, hidden, etc.

Considering your files, I am surprised you are not already using 3rd party search like UltraSearch or WizFile.
The search on the left took over a minute on NVMe! The search in WizFile finished before I stopped typing.

oh. i'm all about VoidTools Everything. haha. even made an Everything Slack for it but I was met with something snarky, and after a couple of days' exchanges there, ultimate advisory that "an Everything Discord exists..."
Meh whatever. Bunch of Richards, i guess. Par for the course.

EDIT: Here ya go. What happens if you click on this link to a topic in my Void-Tools slack. I never referenced Slack like that before, outside of the app, so i dunno what it does. sorry.

As for the video,
AFAIK (or recall) I just opened Explorer.exe to get to the .zip i'd downloaded. Specifically, not that it matters, but you might notice i was looking for "SCP", because the file name should have been "WinSCP" something, right? A minor update to WinSCP which is a sort of FTP-like software (SCP = Secure CP, where the operations are like CP [copy], but with the S, because it's SSH, like Secure Shell. Dig it). So, just finding a file. nothing out of the ordinary.

hence my twilight zone remark. i was like, where the hell is the file?
i dunno man. my mind is like broken. i struggle at most things. i am talented at some things.
it's difficult w/out guidance and the proper "doctors" and "meds", etc.
i used to have that. now i fly on what the doc's who knew what they were talking about told me years ago. and hope the new ones listen and understand.

sorry for venting.

Note: In fact. the desired file is visible in the first 10 secs of that movie -- and in focus. So, why after the filters make THAT desired file be one which becomes IN-visible
(just being lazy thought i'd quick find it i guess? like ya do...)

Save yourself the life you'll lose by watching it. haha
but that is pretty weird, isn't it?

NOTE: I see I do have StEx thing installed. Note the bar kind of above the viewport area. It does not have such a filter featre enabled however. Nevertheless... it's not native. But. StEx is valuable.

like UltraSearch or WizFile.
I'm familiar w/ WizFile, and do use it on occasion. Thanks for the UltraSearch tip!
The search on the left took over a minute on NVMe!
What is NVMe? ... ha. I think "Node Version Manager" (extended?)
acronyms
The search in WizFile finished before I stopped typing.

i like that screenshot. man, what would we do w/out that tiling. that's the best feature. if you ever [need to] mess w/ Linux, you might check out Hyprland .
no alt+tab is the most difficult part of the learning curve.
haha. yeah. i gave up.
but it works really well as the O/S for my non-smart TV. no mouse needed. a so-called "Tiling" environment. i reckon.
hahaha

@TairikuOkami - a quick read suggests UltraSearch doesn't maintain a db. I thought WizFile didn't either.
If that's the case, you might check out FSL SuperFinder XT
that was my go-to before I discovered Everything.
