my laptop battery was working on 31 December but not now. what might have caused its malfunction?

Is the battery the original Dell one or is it a 'third party' replacement?

Has the battery shown any signs of failing in the run up to this happening?

Is the AC adapter the original Dell one?
Dell use 'coded' mains adapters that are identified by the laptop. Generic 3rd party replacement mains supplies will usually not work.

You could try removing the battery and then press and hold the power button for a few seconds (after first disconnecting from AC mains). Refit the battery and retest.

That could just be because the battery has lost a lot of capacity, what little it can now hold doesn't take long to charge up. A battery report can tell you the health of a battery, and its remaining capacity.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

If the laptop works without the battery then charger is functioning correctly. Take a cloth with a bit of rubbing alcohol on it (or some on-the-go alcohol swabs), and clean the metal contacts that connect your battery to your laptop.

Make sure to install all Windows important updates.

Install latest versions of your laptop device drivers you can download the latest device drivers from the device manufacturer or from your laptop manufacturer website.


Step 1

1. Shutdown your laptop.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Connect the AC power adapter to your laptop.

4. Power on the laptop

6. Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).

7. Shutdown the laptop.

8. Insert the battery.

9. Power on the laptop.

If above suggestions wont resolve the battery charge issue then follow below steps.




Step 2

1. Shutdown the laptop.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Start the laptop with only AC adapter connected to laptop.

4. When you login to Windows OS connect the battery while Windows OS working.





Step 3

Reset the System Management Controller. Use one of these methods to reset the SMC, which controls battery management, battery status light.

1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cord.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Press and hold the power button for ten seconds.

4. Reattach the battery and AC power adapter, then start up the laptop.


Hopefully one of the above suggestions will help you resolve the battery not charging problem. If battery still doesn't charge, you may need to replace your battery.

by the above statement, do you mean if Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control is written only once, then I should not be uninstalled, and if it is written more than once, then it should be uninstalled?

i performed step 2 and it failed to fix the problem, then I applied step 3 to fixit, but it didn't fix the problem.

Like i said if you are following the steps i write down and nothing works then it's dead battery that is not charging and need replacement, you can also boot your computer with live Ubuntu USB flash drive to see problem software or hardware related.

Try updating drivers and install missing drivers to see what happens like i said you can always use Ubuntu to find out if its Windows OS problem.
