I’ve been running Avast Free AV on my Win 7 (and prior) computers. Just got a Win 11 laptop and it has McAfee bundled in. Being retired, I don’t need or want another monthly bill. The last time I researched AV programs, Avast was the best free one out there, but that was many years ago. And back then, McAfee didn’t have too good a reputation anyways.

I’ve heard all you need is Windows Defender, but I think I should have a little more protection.

My bundled McAfee trial is over in a few days and I’d like to uninstall it and install Avast since it’s worked fine for 12+ years.

Thoughts? Ideas? Recommendations?

Thanks

If you're just looking for basic malware scanning/monitoring Avast Free is probably fine, see what kind of reviews it currently gets. I've been happy using Bitdefender Antivirus Free. Easy on resources and is pretty much set it and forget it. Every now and then it blocks a legit website but not a problem to bypass the warning.

Malwarebytes paid and Windows defender has been working for me for years. Most AVs don't root out malware.

Well hell, been happily using that little AV for years. Says support will stop June 30th 2022 so I guess I have a little time to decide on other options. Maybe I'll just live with Windows Defender, I keep hearing it's improving all the time and does a decent job. I guess TDKMate and I are both looking for opinions and thoughts now lol.

Windows Defender is all the protection you will need ! The other free ones are mostly resource hogs ! WDfender is all i recommend to all my Malware clients !

I find Avast can really slow down a computer and believe there was comment about that on here recently. I wouldn't touch McAfee with a bargepole. On my main computer with a lot of important files on, I do like to use additional antivirus, but on my occasional use ones I just have defender and Malwarebytes free. Malwarebytes free is good for an "on demand" scan and picks up things that antivirus sometimes doesn't. Generally, if Malwarebytes doesn't find anything, when you're just using defender, then you're ok.

But I did very nearly get my whole network (and all devices on the network) infected by a nasty ancient trojan - from a usb stick that had been in a dead computer I was trying to fix. And my paid for antivirus spotted it and disabled it immediately. For that reason alone I continue with paid for antivirus. But as well as that I now also use Panda USB vaccine. It's a very small program you install on the computer. It "vaccinates" the computer and also any usb stick you insert. What it does is prevent "autorun" on the computer. Viruses on usb sticks usually sit in the .inf file and are launched immediately you plug the usb in. So by having autorun disabled on the computer it stops them getting on the computer. And by "vaccinating" the usb stick - it stops anything being launched by autorun. Basically you just manually open the usb in file explorer and select your files.

It's a very useful little program - especially if you use usb sticks between different computers. For my main computer antivirus I use Norton 360. It's not popular, but it does it's job in the background and I don't find it slows things down at all. The only annoying thing is the install which is quite time consuming. Once installed I'm happy with it. And it did find the trojan and disable it (which defender didn't on my other laptop which had to be completely wiped and a bios scan run). The trojan in question gets into the network in seconds and infects all computers on the network that are turned on, in seconds (including your router). So I am belt and braces these days.

Of course the moral is - don't stick a usb stick in a computer you know nothing about (unless you have Panda usb vaccination and vaccinate all your usb sticks and laptop). The irony was, the usb stick had linux on it. So the Windows virus sat on it in the .inf file without any sign of anything until installed in a Windows computer.

I don't think there's a free one that won't slow your computer down and cause issues. Avira has a high catch rate but slows things down horribly. If you shop around you can get Norton 360 for about £25 for 5 to 10 licences. I am sure there are others but I'm happy sticking with that. I did use bit defender once but got a false positive that borked the computer and had to reinstall. And had the same thing with Kaspersky. Trend Micro is ok - never had an issue with that. But not sure how good the catch rate is.

Basically if you want free av then Defender is probably as good as any - it's not 100% but depends on your computer use. Combined with Malwarebytes free on demand scans.

To conclude: I use Norton 360, Panda USB vaccine (which works with any other AV as it's a very small specific programme) and malwarebytes free for occasional on demand scans. However Norton, recently has started telling you to uninstall malwarebytes when you first download Norton. So best to install Norton first and Malwarebytes second then it's not an issue (it's just a nag).

I use Bitdefender Internet Security, because it has a firewall as well. It's not very expensive..

Whatever you decide to use - uninstall the free McAfee. And expect to get a lot of emails from McAfee warning you you aren't protected - they pester you like heck.

Norton is currently £34.99 for the first year. I never pay more than that every year and sometimes a bit less. They usually offer you a discount to renew if you leave it till a couple of weeks before it expires. And you can get it for less than £20 on Amazon usually.

Does Norton have a block "all" option in the firewall? To me, that is the most important part of a firewall.
I ask because although it's good... Bitdefender is getting bloated. 16 modules. :/
And all I want is AV and firewall, that I control.

When Bitdefender is set like this... the firewall only allows white list items.

I use Bitdefender Internet Security, because it has a firewall as well. It's not very expensive..

Bitdefender Internet Security - Internet Security Software
Between my routers firewall and the windows firewall I think I have adequate firewall protection. Just gotta decide if I need more AV/malware protection then Defender. I do use Malwarebytes Free which I like to run weekly. As expected, some really varied opinions on the subject. Ah decisions, decisions

You might want to check with your ISP to see if they offer anti-virus as part of their service. With my ISP, it offers me McAfee Multi Access as part of my internet service. I won't say it's free but is included as part of my internet service. If not, just use Windows Defender

Bought in late 2015. System has secure boot, but no TPM. I have no intentions on upgrading this system to Windows 11.

Least resource-hungry anti-virus is Kaspersky Cloud Free, it takes about 40MB of RAM

Defender's firewall is OK. But without the ability to block everything, you get into a situation where only MS controls your firewall.

Just go to one of the top 2 Malware Removal places & ask those professionals what you need, number 1 in my book is Bleeping computer & number 2 is What the Tech !! That's my opinion on those i know Malwarebytes is good also ! No i do not work for them, i work for a smaller site which i was told not to mention on here !

I use Defender and Malwarebytes free with Oneclickfirewall for what it's worth.

Which ever one you decide on I would suggest searching for McAfee removal tool to get rid of it as it's very pervasive. If you can, disable it first before removing.
