New install on spare laptop

I have a BSOD thread on 10 forums (initially on here) after my main laptop became unusable. Thankfully I have a virtually unused identical model bought on eBay about two years ago for not very much money

. At the time I thought - could be used if one fails - for spare parts. It’s just an HP Pavilion 14 core i5.

I had recently bought a 2tb M2 as the main laptop was getting quite full on 1tb. So instead have installed it on the “spare” and just installing latest Windows 11 now. Decided to upgrade the ram as well - when it comes.

It’s that one that comes with an Optane drive unfortunately, hence a clean install. Backed up all my files yesterday so should be up and running soon.

Hopefully the issues with my main laptop will be resolved and I can use that as a spare - or for parts.

It was a bit of an update, but yes - anyone else with an hp done a clean install recently?

I can install hp support assistant to check for drivers but how essential is hp systems event utility?

I have done a Clean Install of Windows 11 on an HP Elitebook Laptop. You do not need any of the HP Bloatware, unless you use this stuff.
Press the Windows Key +X and choose Device Manager. If there are no Yellow marks next to devices, than you don't need any drivers. If you want, you can install HP Support Assistant and it will offer any driver and Bios Updates, and automatically install them. Nothing else, needs to be installed from HP.

Ah it’s just not my week! After getting a lovely new install all up and running, the screen has failed. That is three laptops failed in the last month! And I thought having three I would never be without a backup laptop! No issues with backups - just no working computer to install them on. None of them were that old either. Well three or four years old.

Ok this cannot be a coincidence! The same errors on a new install on a different laptop with a new ssd installed - and blue screening again. (And black screen and flickering). Either, coincidentally, both sets of ram are faulty - which seems unlikely but possible. Or it’s a windows thing - maybe a recent update. Can’t even keep it on long enough to try a different graphics driver.

Both computers are identical modeis - 10th generation Core i5 they just can’t handle the latest windows any more!

I don’t think the screen has gone.

Went into safe mode and uninstalled graphics driver and it stayed on long enough for me to download and install the latest Intel driver - see if that does the trick.

Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap - Windows 10 Help Forums

So this new Windows 11 install on the spare laptop. I reinstalled the image made after first installation - before anything went wrong - and did sfc/scannow - and it found errors and repired them. So perhps the usb iso downlod was corrupted.

Ok this is attempt 2 with the spare laptop with new ssd. Made a new iso of windows 11 on a trusted different usb stick. Installed fine. Went to install Intel graphics driver but it failed to install. Meanwhile windows update was ready for a restart. Got stuck on restarting and blue screened. Then restarted. Once Windows updates finished and graphics driver installed I’m going to try sfc/scannow and see if it’s a corrupted install again.

It will no longer be portable but you can use a monitor.

So it blue screened on restart again and sfc scannow found corrupt files again and successfully repaired them. It was just a clean install and windows updates.

I’m going to try installing windows 10

Thanks - I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the monitor actually - I thought it was a graphics issue. But will install windows 10 and run the hardware tests linked above.

. Well as the two laptops are identical - if there is a hardware issue on both I could technically swap parts around. Although not sure how easy it would be to swap a screen or a keyboard on this model. If it is a hardware issue.

I have done it before on two HP laptops. I replaced the screen on a family member's HP laptop and the keyboard on my wife's HP laptop. The were different models. What I did was before ordering anything I searched for how-to videos. Luckily they weren't that hard.

Ok so have now installed Windows 10 on the spare laptop. No issues, restarted fine after updates. Installed the Intel graphics driver no issues (although seems to be an older one still installed). Restarted again no issues.

So either this computer doesn’t like Windows 11, or there was an update causing issues. Now have a whole load more updates to do on windows 10 so see how that goes ……. If I can get it up and running I can run the hardware testing. Currently don’t have a single functioning computer - except the boy’s gaming desktop and it would be a struggle to get access to that!

Thanks. I’ve done it before as well - but it was a fiddle! Only for the new screen to fail shortly after lol.

Or I could take the keyboard from this one to put onto the other one - but the other one still has other issues at the moment.

Have a horrible feeling I’m going to end up with two useless laptops.
