New Laptop: Local Account

My new laptop arrives next week, and it will have Windows 11 Pro installed. I've been advised to set it up with a local account only.

Is this possible, and what are the advantages?

You can use either step below to set up only a local account instead.

One advantage of setting up a local account instead of a Microsoft account during Windows Setup is OneDrive is not automatically turned on and syncing your files causing them to get moved.

You can still use either step below when you get to them in this tutorial to create a local account instead of a Microsoft account during Windows Setup.

step 20B New = The yellow Note box under this step now allows you to click/tap on the Learn more link to set up a local account instead of a Microsoft account.

step 15= This step uses the start ms-cxh:localonly or start ms-cxh://setaddlocalonly command to set up a local account with network.

step 17= The red warning box under this step uses the reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f command to bypass network requirements to then be able to set up a local account.

step 22 = The blue tip box under this step has you use the Domain join instead option that allows you to set up a local account with network.

I used: start ms-cxh:localonly not 3 weeks ago, to set up a LOCAL account on a friends new laptop. :-)

Can I suggest also before doing ANYTHING with the your set up of the new laptop use some stand alone backup program to backup "The Shop state" of the laptop before you set it up. Also usually there's a load of bloatware installed on laptops supplied with windows already installed. There's loads of Trial etc and other software and usually the application that makes even a fast computer run as slow as molasses - Norton Security or similar -- not needed today.

Note - the "recovery mode" often installed with these laptops fails to work properly !!! so having your own copy of the laptop is IMHO essential - so in case set up fails or you need to RMA back to the store etc you can wipe your own data off it and return "as supplied".

Enjoy your "New toy" !!!!

There is a bug in the setup process, so if pressing learn more, it will flicker on the screen and jump to local account setup.
If they have fixed the bug or not... that is another question

.

When i get into windows i will download all available windows updates , drivers etc, i will then download Acronis and make a clone of the C drive, does this sound correct?
