New Most Recently Used (MRU) Notebook List in OneNote for Windows

 Microsoft 365 Blog:

Setting up OneNote on a new Windows device? We know reopening all your important notebooks can be tedious, especially if you have many. Manually searching through each one slows you down and disrupts your flow.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Most Recently Used (MRU) notebook list, a simple, efficient way to pick and open your key notebooks right from the start.

Introducing the Most Recently Used (MRU) List – What to Expect

When you launch OneNote for the first time on a new Windows device, you’ll see a curated list of all your most recently used notebooks which include both personal and shared ones.

The list adapts based on how many notebooks you have:
  • Fewer than 5 notebooks? You’ll see them all at a glance, preselected and ready to open with one click.

  • More than 5 Notebooks? You’ll get a scrollable list with your most active notebooks already checked. Quickly review, add or remove any, and launch them all at once.

Why It Matters

This update takes the hassle out of setup. Instead of digging through dozens of notebooks, you can get back to your work, notes, and ideas in seconds. It’s especially helpful if you manage many personal, shared, or class notebooks.

How It Works

  • Launch OneNote for the first time on a new Windows device
  • The MRU list appears automatically
  • Choose the notebooks you want to open
  • OneNote loads them instantly

Available Now

This experience is only available during the first setup for an existing user on a new Windows device. We're exploring ways to expand it in the future.

We’d Love Your Feedback

Your input helps us improve OneNote every day. After trying out the MRU notebook list, please send your thoughts via Help > Feedback in the app. We’re eager to hear how this feature helped you and any ideas you have to make it better!
