New Outlook for Windows?

Since the New Outlook for Windows is now pre-installed by default on Windows 11, do we still have to include the Outlook New when configuring Office on the configuration page below? Or is it really unnecessary?

The first thing I do with a new install is remove New Outlook using Revo Uninstaller. I then install Office 365 and Outlook Classic.

I've used old Outlook to get my Gmail using POP3 since forever, because I like to have a local copy. It works fine, but I have to delete email I don't want from both Gmail and Outlook, which is my only complaint. I tried new Outlook without POP3, but I still have to delete email from both Gmail and new Outlook. I don't think I even get a real local copy for my trouble. Furthermore, in old Outlook, I have a system of folders and rules to direct incoming email to those folders based on keywords in the message title, and new Outlook doesn't support setting this up for Gmail accounts; I'd have to do it all in Gmail. I think this can be made to work, but unlike old Outlook, new Outlook always starts up with all folders collapsed; it doesn't remember the unfolded state of my folders hierarchy.

Is there any benefit to new Outlook? Anything at all?

Sometime in the future, we're all going to have to say goodbye to Outlook (Classic) as it's being discontinued.

But there's no rush to switch just yet.

I have it as part of Office LTSC 2021. Even when support ends in 2029, you can still use it. All that means is you won't get security updates for it.

There are a helluva lotta corporations that base a lot of what they do on Outlook Classic. I don't really think Microsoft is going to get many corporate converts with how limp and ineffective the New Outlook is. I don't think Outlook Classic is going to go away.

I know....I hate it too.

All I need to know is that do I need to enable the Outlook New on the Office Config page or not since Windows 11 already has it pre-installed by default now?

I'll let someone else answer that question, as I don't understand what you're asking.
If I try to sign in with the link you provided in your original post, I get the message that it's only available for work or school accounts.

New Outlook is web based and is free.

Outlook Classic either came with your standalone Microsoft Office Suite or as a subscription to Microsoft 365.

You can even still use Outlook Express (on a Windows XP VM) if you are so minded. Actually it was a shame to get rid of such a small easy simple email system. Who needs a load of these modern complex emails stuff with all these "collaborative apps and team things" in it --email is not a good system for that these days -- far better to use things like teams / whatsapp etc for that type of thing. Emails in any case are more and more read / used on phones so large complex email systems aren't wanted anyway.

In any case for Outlook (both old and new) just use IMAP and if you want local folders just open a local .pst file and move / copy relevant emails to it (or sub folders you create within it.

I'm not sure why anybody would stil be using POP3 for Email any more especially if you have a myriad of different devices.

As far as Gmail and regular (non gmail) accounts I can't understand why your mail is getting duplicated to both accounts -- unless you have / send emails from / to both accounts automatically.

As far as I can tell there is no difference between "New Outlook" pre-installed with Windows, from MS365, or the App Store.

And since the New Outlook can be excluded in the Office Deployment tool with no side-effects, then you should be OK to do the same in your Deployment Dialog. (But there doesn't seem to be any reason to bother one way or the other).

There might be one place it makes a difference, but I can't test. If you do an Office Repair it will put back anything you originally deployed. So, if you plan to uninstall New Outlook, that might be a reason to not include it on your Deployment Dialog.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Since like you mentioned that there is already the New Outlook on Windows 11 machines, for me, it would just make more sense to exclude it from the Deployment Tool.

To answer your question, you can still use Outlook classic in Office 2021. Just be sure to NEVER toggle on Outlook new within Office Outlook 2021.
To remove the toggle and prevent getting automatically switched to Outlook New follow this article and make the necessary registry changes.

I don't use 365 so I'm just assuming here. I would not check the box to install outlook new since it's already installed. Once 365 is installed, as per the article, uninstall the existing outlook new (I would use Revo uninstaller to do this) and then make the registry changes. Before making changes be sure to backup the registry keys as they are now in case something goes awry.

But the one that's already included in Windows already needs to be updated with the latest version. But I would guess that when I start using it, it should immediately download the latest version automatically in the background.
