New 'puter - what to do AFTER OOBE?

This is probably already dealt with - but just in case.....When I first got my Windows 11 machine I spent most of the first day thinking I was going to lose my mind...or that I had already lost it! I didn't know that in Win 11, it arrives with Windows already connected to One Drive. And every time you put a file on your desktop, as many of us do almost reflexively, Win 11 takes the file and store it on One Drive.

So I put a file on my desktop. I went to Explorer to find the file...and it wasn't there! I went back to the desktop and there it was....but it wasn't listed under the desktop in explorer. A friend used his win 11 computer for over a year never realizing the files on his desktop did not actually "live" on his machine and were not private and local, as he'd assumed.

it sounds as though @SlicEnDicE is going round things twice, once to test, once for a clean install of vanilla Windows?
Yes, once to test the actual hardware and vendor specific drivers. If any test fails first round, I return the product and either want a new one or I cancel the purchase altogether.

I'm not sure I understand how you're doing this before OOBE? Downloading / obtaining the latest Windows ISO / set up disk?
easiest way is to have a Linux Live Distro on a bootable thumb drive and just dd (it's a Linux command that makes a 1:1 copy of the whole disk and can easily be restored) the whole original disk to an external hdd. There are other methods too.

I've never done this, but I did this time after my bad experience with the previous machine, and after reading various commentaries on system temperatures for comparable machines to the one I bought.
Very good, this ensures your computer runs within specs and also lets you make sure it is still running within specs while there is still warranty left. Do the full benchmark thing maybe every 6 months to see where everything is headed. If something is off and it can not be fixed by yourself, get it fixed on warranty.

Wondered if it might be something like that, thanks.
