Hi. My WIN11 desktop is connected by ethernet to my router and has no connection. All my wifi-enabled devices are online and connected fine. I've unplugged and re-plugged the router and no change. I've connected an old desktop through the same ethernet cable and port on the router and it connected online fine.

Network & Internet settings menu shows "Not Connected" and does not show an option for Ethernet.

Advanced Network Settings>Network Rest runs and restarts the computer but is not changing anything that I can see.

Device Manager shows my Network Adaptors are working properly.

ipconfig /flushdns gives me "Could note flush the DNS Resolved Cache: Function failed during execution."

ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew give this same error: "The RPC server is unavailable. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected."

Network and Internet troubleshooting responds to me clicking it for a second but does not run.

I am stumped and close to resetting the pc. What else can I try before taking that step? Thank you.

You could try repairing your system with DISM and sfc commands.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

SFC /ScanNow

Thanks for the quick response. I tried that and got "Error: 87 The cleanup-image option is unknown." And then referencing DISM help. Help showed online as an Image Specification, but not RestoreHeskth or Startcomponentcleanup. Any other options I can try?

Lots of things can cause a network issue
  • Defective cable
  • Defective/disabled ports
  • Corrupt ARP cache
  • Corrupt or missing routes
  • Conflict in the assigned IP address (more prevalent if you set your IP statically)
  • Corrupted winsock
  • Firewall blocking
  • Endpoint protection software blocking
  • DNS problems
  • Broken VPN software

When I try to turn that on, I get "The dependency service or group failed to start." Where can I get more info or start that dependency?

I'm with @OAT it sounds like it could be one or more key service(s) aren't running.

Possible candidates could be something like one of these:
  1. Application Layer Gateway Service Network Connections Network Location Awareness (NLA)
  2. Plug and Play
  3. Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
  4. Remote Access Connection Manager Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Telephony

On my system all these are set to manual in services.msc

The event viewer should help, could be Event ID 1068

EDIT: @glasskuter makes a good suggestion above, run Repair Install. Also have you run a full anti-virus scan as a precaution?

If your Ethernet connection isn’t working or showing in Windows 11, but Wi-Fi devices and the cable/router are all confirmed working, you can try these optional steps

• Check Ethernet is enabled
Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
If the Ethernet icon is greyed out, right-click and Enable it.
If it's missing, go to Device Manager > Network Adapters, right-click your Ethernet adapter, and Uninstall. Restart the PC to reinstall it.

• Reset TCP/IP stack
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
Code:
netsh int ip reset
netsh winsock reset
Restart the PC after running those.

• Check services
Open services.msc and ensure these are set to Automatic and Running:
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness

• Reinstall the Ethernet adapter
In Device Manager, right-click your Ethernet adapter > Uninstall device.
Tick “Delete driver software” if prompted.
Restart the PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall it clean.

• Force network stack repair
Open Command Prompt as Admin and run:
Code:
reg delete "HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3}" /va /f
netcfg -v -u dni_dne

• Re-enable the adapter using PowerShell
Open PowerShell as Admin and run:
Code:
Get-NetAdapter
If your Ethernet adapter shows as Disabled:
Code:
Enable-NetAdapter -Name "Ethernet" -Confirm:$false

• Still not working?

Try creating a new local user account and test networking there — this can rule out profile-specific issues.

You can remove it when you’re finished.

Also;

Consider Rebooting your router (first)
Or
Consider resetting the router to factory settings and setting the router up again according to your ISP’s settings.
