Got free driver update on win 10 and sound device disappeared. Upgraded to win 11 thinking it would reinstall my sound device, but win 11 says that there is no sound device installed, however it also says that the sound device driver is working fine. Any ideas of what I should do?

If the sound adapter doesn't show in Device Manager and when putting the mouse pointer over the icon in the Notification Area shows "No sound device found" it a bad sign the adapter has failed/broken, had that happen to me not long ago and got a new motherboard installed under warranty.

Welcome to the forum. That statement is confusing to me. Screenshots would help. First try the most obvious solutions.

1. run sound troubleshooter-
settings-system-troubleshoot-other troubleshooters-playing audio-click run.

2. Open device manager-expand sound video and game controllers.
Right click on Realtek (if it exists) select properties. What is device status? Does it show it's working properly.
Right click on it again. Select uninstall device. Check the box to remove the driver-uninstall
restart computer

3. Go to manufacturer site and download the sound driver for your device and install it.

4. settings-system-sound- Make sure your speakers are set as default device and not muted.

5. If none of the above work open command prompt as administrator type sfc /scannow

Report back your findings.

So you DO see Realtek audio in device manager, correct? In bottom right task tray do you have a sound icon? Yes or No? Unlike in previous version of Windows this icon can no longer be hidden so it should be there.
When you hover your mouse over it, what does it say? It should say Speakers Realtek audio.

Do you hear audio when you plug in earphones into the headset jack? If so, this proves your sound driver and sound chip is working and points to the speakers in the laptop being defective. That can be easily proven by connecting a pair of cheap usb speakers or BT speakers and then going to settings-system-sound- and selecting the correct speakers as output device.

If you don't hear earphone sounds either, to my way of thinking it would point to a Realtek chip or motherboard failure.

If you have a backup from before you updated the driver... I would restore to that backup, first.
If the sound still doesn't work, then you know you have a hardware problem.

If after a restore the sound starts to work again, then you know it's a software problem.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
There seems to be a new audio device in the manager and the troubleshooter tried a fix. I restarted but the speaker icon on the taskbar still says no audio device is installed.

It seems to me that if my audio device is onboard and is good, and the driver is installed and is working fine, but I still have no audio, that something is missing between the device and the driver. Is there an installation procedure for the onboard device itself?

Onboard sound chip is soldered to motherboard. Realtek and Intel SST are 2 separate drivers.
Per Acer you have Realtek audio. Support | Acer United States

This was posted on another forum. I can not attest that it will work but you can try it.
  • Open Device Manager (Open the start menu, type Device Manager and press enter) and select System Devices (close to the end of the list).
  • Locate Intel Smart Sound Technology driver (SST).
  • Right-click and select Update Driver from the pop-up menu.
  • Choose browse my computer for driver software and then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer and select High Definition Audio.
  • Click Next.
  • Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) driver will disappear and you should have Audio back.
Once SST disappears you may have to install the audio drive from Acer if Windows does not pick up the Realtek driver.

All I'm saying is that according to Acer for that model, it shows your sound driver to be Realtek which is a separate chip on your motherboard. I can only go by what your manufacturer has listed. Your audio driver should be listed under Sound, Video, and Game Controller in device manager, not under system devices.

Intel SST is an integrated audio processor which the manufacturer may or may not use in their systems. It is my understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that when Intel SST is installed, it uses the Realtek codec package alongside it. I merely passed along a possible solution that was posted on several sites, including Intel's forum.

I downloaded and installed a new audio driver
You say you downloaded a new audio driver? Where from?
If it were mine, (but it's not, it's yours) I would completely remove both of those Intel SST devices (as well as remove their drivers) and restart the machine to see if Windows will find the correct drivers. If it doesn't, I would download the drivers from Acer. If still no luck I would go to Intel site and run their Intel Driver and Support Assist tool which will scan the system and install new or missing drivers.

If you have concerns that your audio does or does not require a Realtek driver, contact Acer Support.
The only thing I can say for sure and for certain is you should not have 2 Intel SST devices installed at the same time.

I did it brummyfan, and it looked promising, the little x came off the speaker icon on the taskbar, and I can adjust the volume, I can see that it is playing but there still is no sound on speakers or earphones. It still says no input or output device installed.

I merely passed along a possible solution that was posted on several sites, including Intel's forum.

Glasskuter The High Definition driver worked. Thankyou very much:-)
I will have to uninstall the fx thing because it won't allow me to switch to earphones. Otherwise, all is well.

Uninstall the FX thing first and restart.
Now that you have changed it to hi def audio, run windows update. It should pick up a Realtek driver. Check your optional updates. It may show up there.

Hi Def audio will give you sound, but the sound is not as good as when running the Realtek codecs.
