My windows 11 version is 23H2. I can't figure this out, and would so appreciate someone pointing me to something that will stop my laptop from logging out when I close the lid. I know how to set it so it either sleeps (battery or plugged in) or hibernates but I prefer sleep option.

When opening the lid it looks to try to be restarting but it's asking for login info. When I click on restart though myself, it goes on to skip the login/password etc. straight to my desktop. I'd really appreciate any help, thank you :)

All of mine with only Local Accounts work the same way but my latest has the Microsoft Account that requires using a PIN. They don't actually shut down.

Ok, would this work for me if I can get the MS Account to be a Local Account? I guess I mean, can I delete the MS Account and just keep a Local Account? I do have to users, one in my name, and the other just says Admin. But I'm an Admin as well. Hope that makes sense  Thank you for your reply!!

I think I found the answer right off??

If I were to change my latest Notebook I'd add a new User with a slightly different name as Local Account with Admin rights, log out of the Microsoft Account then reboot to get into the Local Account. After that I could either keep the Microsoft Account with 2 log-in choices or remove the Microsoft Account.

I don’t think that you need to change your account type, do you?

You haven’t mentioned the Laptop brand and model and if it is a proprietary setup with bloatware or if you have installed Windows fresh without it? Like a Lenovo original install?

Locate the setting for "If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again?" By default, this will be set to "When PC wakes up from sleep", click the drop-down here, and change this option to Never to disable the password prompt after the computer wakes from sleep.

Take a look Settings (Win+I) > Accounts > Sign-in options > Scroll down to Additional settings

And for other options.

I'll take a closer look at all the answers here, and then try something. I did notice if I power completely off, shut-down, when I power back up, it logs me in normally like it used to before this happened.

I didn't know you needed any further info as I read "how to" post and it only asked for Version

I have an HP Laptop, and I'll attach a pic of it's specs

It is good to fill in the “details” here ⬇️
As you have entered a desktop in your specs and you are referring to a Laptop in your post, you can add a “System Two” to your specs.

This link will open your System Specs:

I have these options in Windows for my MSI laptop. When set to do nothing everything comes back normal. I put it to sleep using the power button menu or by timer.

And for other options.

This is the Win11 that came on the HP.

I've tried this, over and over again. I now cannot get to the sign in screen because I bypassed that screen when I first got this laptop. I can't login to another account, like I was sent to log into Microsoft account, I think, I am getting so confused. I'll have to add the specs here on the site for all to see, but later. I'm just too tired.

Thank you for all your help!!

Ok @antspants, I can get that done. It's just I'm packing to move to another State, plus a puppy I'm training :) I did the quick fix which is to "shutdown" my laptop. Then when I lift the lid I just push the "power" button and it boots up bypassing all the login junk. I'll do that for now, but will bookmark this thread :) thanks so much!
