I don't know offhand about the Academy Awards. But my answer is something very specific about those particular actors.

OK, I'll spill the beans...... All of them were co-stars in films in which the main star was Shirley Temple. So it was as if they were "working for a child". In general, it didn't cause any problems. But, according to Shirley's autobiography, there was some friction between her and Lionel Barrymore.
