Old Versions of Paint Shop Pro

I used Paint Shop Pro 8 and 9 for many, many years and was extremely happy with it, with no problems. I now have Windows 11 and I could not install my old PSP because older PSP versions are not supported/compatible with Windows 11. I had to resort to purchasing the newer version of Paint Shop Pro and I hate it. It has none of the brushes, tubes, etc., and, before you can do anything, it wants you to purchase just about everything that the old versions already had--free! It's lacking in so much of what I was used to. It takes hours, and sometimes days, to complete just one single task whereas the older versions took one hour, at the most. I tried looking (constantly) for a way to somehow download older versions (especially 8 or 9) in my Windows 11. If anyone has a "go-around" solution, I would be most grateful. I have tried googling an answer, but they were all duds.

Can you not transfer the old brushes or are these classed as too old by the new program?

I'm not quite sure how to transfer brushes, etc. from my old PSP8 to my new-ish Windows 11, and PSP22. If I could succeed in doing that, it would be quite awesome :giggle: .

I just copied the specific brushes etc from their specific old folder to the same new folder on win 11.
I’ve copied brushes, masks clip art etc from all my old versions to PSP 2022 & should I upgrade again will do the same if needed.

I've always kept plenty of copies of PSP 4.12 around, using it on all my computers. It was working fine on Windows 11, until suddenly it was disabled by Windows 11 as a result of automatic forced Windows 11 updates, I'm sure. I recently bought a new laptop, and PSP 4.12 was working fine on that laptop .. for a while. Then Windows 11 disabled it, obviously as a result of the forced Windows 11 updates. I then had the same experience with 7-zip. I would sure like to know whether there's a way to over-ride the Windows 11 sabotage and get PSP 4.12 (and other executable files) working again.

It works on Win 11. I just downloaded the ISO, mounted it and ran...
jasc-paint-shop-pro-4.12\PSP4\EXEC\]PSP.exe

You could even Extract the ISO to a folder on a USB stick.
That way, you can run it on any computer.


I tested them ALL... 4.12, 7.04, 8.1, and 9.01
They all work on the latest version of Win 11.
Actually they all work on all versions of Windows. :cool:


Personally, I like PSP 7.04 the best. It comes with Animation Shop 3, as well.
It's much more powerful that 4.12... but it didn't get the weirdness that 8.1 and 9.01 got. :-)

I downloaded the iso file for PSP 4.12 from the URL you provided. I mounted the iso, then ran PSP.exe. Same result: The program opens for a tiny fraction of a second then shuts down, disappearing from the task bar as well.

I have my Windows theme set to dark (it's just easier on my eyes). Is there a way to set the UI on PSP 9 to a dark mode?

Welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

I wouldn't know. I only tested it back in May 2022. I "use" PSP 7.04
I doubt the PSP UI even knew what dark mode was, back then. :-)



Maybe set the "Default App Mode" in Window's Settings... to dark as well as the Theme?

Changing that Setting to "dark" doesn't work on PSP 7.04.


I believe GIMP has or is permanently in "dark" mode.
Much stiffer learning curve though.

You need to use the directions in the .zip file included in the OP...
Make sure you follow the PSP 9 instructions.

Btw, PSP 7.04 is better than PSP 9.01

2. Then to install... follow the instructions in the PSP 9 README.txt directions in the ZIP file, in post #13 above. :-)

You might want to try this too. We've not tried it on PSP 9.01
So you need to look at Help > About ...and click the System Info button.
Post a screenshot of that, please.

In PSP 7.04, mine looks like this...

Thanks to @Bree ...in this post, he discovered how to make PSP 7.04 LLA (Large Address Aware).

Paint Shop Pro 4.12 and 7.04 and 8.1 and 9.01

Yeah. I opened it in Firefox... which gave me the option to Save it. After saving it... I could then open it in SumatraPDF. Open it in Firefox or SumatraPDF, then try copying text from it and pasting into Notepad.

Making PSP large address aware, makes using Animation Shop... a LOT easier.
Without this change... PSP 7.04 always "ran out of memory", when working on Animations.

As I said... this hasn't been tested on PSP 9.01
It may already BE Large Address Aware. That's why we need to see the screen shot... to make sure. :-)




JASC Paint Shop Pro 9.01 was released in Sept. 2004, so it may also have this problem on modern OSes.

Back in the Windows XP days... Windows could only use ~3.5GB of the 4GB of RAM.
So 32 bit programs like PSP, were only allowed to use about 2GB of RAM.
And working with Animations took more than that. :cool:

I bought PSP7.04 quite some time ago. I still have the CD, original packaging and all the manuals (not as pdf, but real books on paper).

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Thanks Ghot! I'm getting ready for surgery on the 8th So I'm not going to have time to play with it for the rest of this week. I have to do my exercises twice a day and a lot of other things, which is the reason I'm not going to have time Gotta get my strength up! Also I've got a couple more doctor's appointments which takes up at least half of the day.
