Solved OneDrive Space

Working on a brand new device Win 11 Home 25H2 26200.8037 - more updates are under way.

When I picked up from client they were 398% over their OneDrive storage. Limit. We resolved that by upgrading the their storage to the 100GB package. When you access account it now shows 19% in use, 19GB of 100GB used.

That said the OneDrive icon in the system tray has a red X and when you click on it it says you are 398% over limit. Tried restart the machine, twice, no go. Exited Onedrive, started app again, no go.

When you click on Onedrive settings it shows the correct account. Lower left corner shows space is 398% over. If you click on manage space it takes you to account and says 19GB of 100GB being used.

Is there a way to ask Onedrive on PC to update itself. This is a new device and I have not updated the store apps as of yet. Next on list of "To Do"

Update OneDrive contents automatically

I have a OneDrive account and uploaded files from my hard drive there already. Con someone indicate how I might update those files automatically within a specified interval (for example every 6 hrs)? I have Windows 11 and would rather not have to use a third party app to do it. All help...

You can try to run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset. The OneDrive icon should disappear and come back in a few minutes. If it doesn't, just run %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe.

(I'm assuming your OneDrive client is installed in the user profile. Some places have it installed for all users, so the path is different.)

The other path is. I run reset command and get %localappdata% can't be found

Are you running the command in a PowerShell window? That won't work because of the percents without escaping them. Use a Run box or cmd.

Thanks Josey. I read that thread. I don't see a way to cause OneDrive to recalibrate the storage numbers.

So ran command from run box. Command ran successfully. Got message OneDrive is being reset. I see it counting down files to be processed.

That said the path still shows "Storage Full" and if you open onedrive it shows using 398% percent. Maybe after all files are processed it will reset storage count. This will take a very long time at the current rate of processing.

I stand corrected. speed really picked up. Reset complete.

Storage issue remains. Still says I've used 398% of the space.

Thank you for the help. Not sure if it was the reset or just waiting it out. The storage is now reporting correctly. After the reset it was still showing overfilled. I did some googling and it said it could take up to 48 hours. What??? Everywhere I clicked to manage storage it showed unused storage. Anyway about three hours later it showed all good. Thank you again.

Spoke to soon. I would state how I really feel but I would likely get banned.

Tuesday night all green lights, lots of space, all day Wednesday, lots of space. I take it to the clients house today, connect to their network, set network to "Private" and I'm back to using 398% of the space. Restart device, nope.

Open OneDrive, settings, lower left corner, 398% utilized, click manage storage, 19.9 of 100GB used. 80% free.

Microsoft should be embarrassed by the way their products fail. I told client let's see if it corrects itself over time.

You won't get banned if you point out that you are only sharing your opinion. In my opinion One Drive is more trouble than it is worth. It is rife with issues and behaves like legalized ransomware. I'm guessing it is the number one reason why so many people opt for local accounts. The big three that I eliminate from all of my personal builds are 1) BitLocker 2) Co-Pilot 3) One Drive. This can make the headaches go away so fast one wonder why they didn't do it sooner. Indeed, user preference prevails and even yours truly likes to fiddle with things to see what they do. This is a great forum where freedom of expression is allowed within reason. I think it's great to be able to access a forum that isn't drowning in potty mouth and vulgarity while opinions are still permitted. Hey, people will even openly chat about Linux here. IMO the mods are doing a swell job. Here's to hoping you get it sorted.

The OneDrive client is one of those things that works almost all of the time, but when it doesn't, it can be a huge pain. Switching plans is, unfortunately, one of those things that causes behavior like this.

A common issue is that the online recycle bin needs to be cleared manually.

I will try the "Empty Recycle" when I'm there next Cereberus

What I don't understand is why MS doesn't create a hit team and bring these ongoing issues to closure. I guess that would lead to a triage of what issues to address first but really, assign the resources, poach when needed and improve the quality. Not that long ago I got an email from MS Insiders say they were working on improving quality, I await the results.

I'll keep you posted. Might give the unlink pc fix a shot.

Of course what would be really nice is if time would fix. I saw one comment that one should get MS involved. Is there a support link for paying customers? I'm going check around in mine.

There are 3 versions of OneDrive, opening Personal Folder triggers setup of the proper x64 version.

Thanks. Just for clarification, I think you mean clicking on the folder in the navigation pane on the left in File Explorer. His system, as does one of mine, says "Name - Personal". I do see OneDrive on some of my other, not signed in systems, listed as "OneDrive - Personal" on navigation pane.

Am I looking in the right spot? Thanks

So I took the laptop to the clients house on April 2, 2026 where it once again reported out of space. (Post #11 in this thread.)

I called April 7th to get status update. Fully resolved and for the record I did nothing. Just waited it out, which is one of the solutions on the net, it just takes time.

Hope it doesn't go into error status with every new network they connect to.
