General Open Jump Lists in Windows 11

Jump_Lists_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to open Jump Lists for apps for your account in Windows 11.

Jump Lists are available when you right click on an app on the taskbar or Start Menu that supports having a jump list.

Jump Lists are lists of app specific tasks or items you can quickly open or get to for every day usage. Jump Lists can include pinned items, recent items, frequent items, tasks, and/or websites recently opened in the app.

Items pinned to an app's jump list will appear at the top of the jump list for quick access.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22635.4000 (Beta) and build 26120.1843 (Dev), Microsoft is beginning to try out showing jump lists when you hover your mouse cursor over apps on the taskbar that have jump lists and are inactive.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22635.4010 (Beta), Insiders in the Beta Channel who have the experience where we show jump lists when you hover your mouse cursor over apps on the taskbar that have jump lists that began rolling out with Build 22635.4000, there is a setting to turn this off should you want to via Settings > Personalization > Taskbar under “Taskbar behaviors”.

Starting with Windows 11 build 22631.4541 (23H2) and build 22631.4534 (24H2), when you right-click apps that you have pinned to the Start menu, jump lists will appear for apps that have jump lists.

Hello @Brink, thank you for this reminder. Just to mention that option 3 does not work for me: when I right-click a pinned app icon, I get a contextual menu related to the pinned app management.

I have one annoying issue: for some unknown reason, I can't unpin a particular CPL component pinned from a Jump List for the legacy Control Panel itself pinned in the Windows taskbar. This shortcut is broken: when I click on it I get the message " The item you have selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list? " It then gives two option to either cancel or delete. Deleting does not work. I've right clicked to unpin and no action is taken either, it's persistently staying in the jump list. I can pin and unpin new CPL components to the excel jump list without any issue

I searched for the location where the pinned and recent items are actually registered in the jump lists in the perspective of manually deleting this "ghost" object. I came across different possible answers:
  • folder "C:\Users\<username>AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations" for pinned items
  • folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations for recent items
  • file 1b4dd67f29cb1962.automaticDestinations-ms where the stuff might be registered
My question is: have you any idea or an accurate solution for definitively removing a "ghost" pinned item in a jump list that is dead then useless?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Hello mate, :alien:

Option three is currently only available in the Insider Beta channel.

You can try option one below to clear and reset jump lists to remove the ghost item.

Thanks for the Windows 10 link @Brink. I had already tried option 2 to no avail. As it cleared all my saved recent items but my pinned ones from all Jump Lists, I won't tried options 1 and 3 to lose all my saved recent items again. I prefer to keep my ghost recent item and will wait for it to automatically disappear upon a Windows update or upgrade. Useful information, anyway!
