Optimizing Fan (Currently Too Loud) - Browsing/Desktop Only

Hi everyone!

I'm posting here again because previously I've gotten such great help.

I've invested in a new PC, and can't find out how to fix the fans to make the quieter.

I've researched, and watched videos about adjusting fan curves but it seems very complex.

Is there no easy way to deal with this?

I want 2 modes that I can switch between:

- Browsing in Chrome: fans as quiet as possible
- Video editing in HD: don't care about noise

Let me know which other details you need to know/screenshots, etc.

Click on your Start Menu and search System Information and post a screenshot of that.
We'd like to know what motherboard you have.

The downloadable manual for your B650 Gaming Plus Wifi doesn't give a lot of details on BIOs settings.

The online description of the board claim that it's easy to set the fan profiles in the BIOS. I wonder if there's a suitable pre-defined profile for the CPU fan?

The fan speed should be low when the CPU is at idle.

If the noise is due to the GPU, you'd need a Windows utility to set a profile for it. MSI Afterburner can do that, for most GPUs.

Guys, y'all know I'm not a system builder, but if his fans are loud with no load, I would want to know the WHY before I dittled with fan speeds. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but would it not be appropriate to advise him to run some stress tests and see what the deal is with his temps. There's a reason for it.

I know what I use for that but I will let you advise the best way for him. IMO this should have been done by whomever built the system. At the very least, I'd be monitoring temps across the cores using Coretemp.

@VictoriusH Coretemp is a small utility that runs in your system tray that lets you know either the temps of all cores or just the hottest core depending on your settings in the app. It can also show you the load. It looks like this screenshot.

If the room temperature is no more than 21 °C(69,8 °F) and no games are running, the front fans don't spin (to keep dust down).
Of course it depends on the model of the fan.

You may not configure the CPU fan.

Poke around in its settings. You can change a number of things. I have my Coretemp set to shut my system down when it reaches 100.

I currently have fan issues in that either a bios update screwed up automatic fan speed or the mobo itself no longer controls fan speed. Dell's proprietary crap will not let me flash a older bios to prove it. The Dell diagnostics shows all fans pass (they've all been changed though) I have another motherboard but haven't felt well enough to get it changed out. Its just a like for like OEM board which I have no options for manually controlling fan speed. In the meantime I southern engineered and added an intake fan which is helping until I feel like tackling it.

Hi.

I set fan speeds in the BIOS.

For CPU fan I use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) mode and set the lowest CPU fan speed at 300 RPM (silent profile). For case fan I let the fan follow CPU profile.

My motherboard is 11 years old. You may have more advanced settings in BIOS if your M/B is newer.

Those temps look fine to me but I would bet that the screenshot was taken when your fans were running at normal speed as they should be.

I re-read the original post this morning and took something else away from it. I now understand that you are not having temp issues and your fans are running normally. What you're asking is to be able to control your fan speeds "on the fly" which is over my head so the others will have to advise you. In my limited knowledge the only way for a user to change his fan speeds "on the fly" is either with a physical fan controller with a knob or 3rd party software controlled by auto hotkeys. Am I right about that guys?

Disable hardware acceleration, CPU is more optimized. Optionally disable animations, effects in Windows, transparency is a killer.

You said you were not having temp issues. Are you now saying your fan speeds increase anyway during browsing ???

Fans should not increase in speed unless the mobo detects temperature increases from inside the case .
Maybe I am just dense. If so forgive me, but the thing is I can't read between the lines to determine if your question about changing your fan control settings is a hypothetical inquiry or if you actually have a problem and your fans speed up for no apparrent reason when there is no load on the machine..
