I had Office 2021 installed and working fine but it did allow me to follow hyperlinks in emails.......
But I didn't like a few things the program so I uninstalled it....rebooted....and installed Office Professional Pro 2016.....
Office is activated....

Outlook found the PST and set up perfectly....
I can send and receive emails no problem...

Problem is I cannot open a hyperlink from any email....Nor can I use Control + select to open a hyperlink...
I get generic error...."Your organization's policies are preventing u from completing this action for you. For more info please contact your help desk...

This is a stand alone computer not connected to any domains, servers, intranets etc.....

I seem to recall a checkbox somewhere...
Options > Mail I think....that you check if you want active hyperlinks....

Suggestions is appreciated...

Set Your Default Browser Properly.

Even if it looks correct, reselecting it can refresh the setting:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Default Apps
  • Scroll to Web browser and choose Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox
  • Restart Outlook and test a hyperlink
Also check:
  • Open Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations
  • Ensure .html, .htm, HTTP, and HTTPS are linked to your browser

I had this problem (on W10) in 2020 (plus ca change etc): but before recalling that, I googled, and found this - a very old web page, I suspect, but apparently dated 06/25/2025 (I wonder...). In there are instructions on fixing the problem for browsers IE-6 to IE10 (and nothing else!), but also a ref to a registry setting in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command.

Intrigued by that, I checked my registry, and sure enough I have that value set, as "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" %1

So that rang a bell, and in my notes I found the 2020 reference, which explained that the problem arose once IE was removed from Windows, because Outlook (in my case O2010) was still trying to run IE. How absurd. Anyway, updating that reg entry to point to my browser of choice did the trick, and still works to this day. This post in the W10 forum explains more.

HTH, Martin

Try creating a new 2016 Profile? I can see where 2016 might have problems using a Profile created in 2021.

This will mean you loose all your Outlook Settings and you'll have to export your Contacts and Calendar from the old profile and import them into the new profile. Messy.

How do I create a new Outlook profile?

NO: the browser setting should be under ...shell\open\command, just as mine. If that key does not exist, create it. Your setting under ...shell\open\command\shell\print\command (you may have mis-typed) matches mine under ...shell\Print\command. (but I am on 2010).

Well....I am not quite at the point to create a new profilel in Outlook....
Right now I'm getting along ok with just copying the hyperlink.....

BUT.......this machine needs to be rebuilt as there are several things not working quite right......mostly this hyperlilnk thing and
my iDrive backup is not running.......so gonna do a rebuild in a couple weeks and see where that puts me.....

I have several drives on this PC.......C:\ is only the OS and Programs.......All data are on other drives.....so backing up the C:\ is easy.....

Many thanks to all of you for your suggestions.....
I appreciate you taking the time....

And mngerhold......I created the 2 folders and put the "C:\Program Files\Brave\Brave.exe" %1 in Shell\Open\Command and did not work.....

Again...thank you all......

Well, that looks OK to me, so I don't have anything else to offer (I have to assume the path to Brave and .exe name are correct). But try a re-boot before giving up.
