My Dell Omen Desktop PC connects to my router at the other end of the house via an ethernet cable that goes through the wall round the house and back through the wall to the (Plusnet) router.

This morning it has connected via wifi not ethernet.

I have rebooted router rebooted PC.

What else can I try?

Try uninstalling Ethernet driver and reboot your system if it does not work, visit Ethernet manufacturer website to install latest version of the driver.

One thing you can do to help verify is to look at the lights on the ethernet jack on the PC. See if they are lighting up indicating it's connecting. Could just as easily be the ethernet cable itself.

No lights on the Ethernet cable. Should they be there all the time? I removed the cable and reinserted but no lights.

Have also tried system restore.

Yes the lights "should" be illuminated but only if there is a signal detected. Depending on the specific adapter it should have 2 lights and both indicate a certain connectivity. Your Device Manager screenshot shows no issues with the hardware itself but as mentioned could be a driver issue. But again if no lights illuminated this points to hardware. Ethernet cable check both ends including the end connected at router. How about the lights there...at the Router?

It's probably not an issue but the usual length for CAT 5 cable is 100 meters or a bit over 300 feet, might check what is in use, Type is printed on the cable sheath. Running unshielded type cable near heavy-use electrical devices can have an issue, sometimes too close to fluorescent light fixtures, etc.

Pointing to the exterior Ethernet cable?

If not an outdoor rated cable it could be due to moisture in it, or it got damaged.

You can't pull it using the bad cable? The thing with non-outdoor rated cable is the sun can deteriorate the jacket then it cracks letting moisture in. Good luck if you can't replace it.

It's possible it's the connector at either end. They are replaceable. Takes some special tools however to install a new connector. Nothing fancy however.

Only thing there is I would still check the cable with a tester. Just spinning the wheels and buying the crimper and connectors if cable is shot, then ending up buying the cable also. It could start working again if it is moisture and the sun dries it out. Then go bad again when moisture comes back. One of those deals where I'd replace the cable with a good outdoor rated one and be done with it. That's just me.

I was going to suggest a simple ethernet cable tester.

If you do replace the cable, I would suggest going with CAT6 cable instead of CAT5e. More bandwidth, more speed, and less affected by distance and noise.
