Solved PCIe and USB-C

I believe Hubs that offer multiple charge ports need to be run from wall power.
USB ports can only charge one device as far as I know.
Plugging a hub into a wall socket is fine with me. I'd like one that has multiple USB-C ports and that can charge and send data through each of them. I may be dreaming, though. lo..

As far as I know... if you want data and charge on one USB port, you need to "use" one USB port on your computer.
You can split the data in a USB port, but not the power.

To split the power you need a larger power source... like a wall plug.

On the back of your computer, you need 1 USB port to charge one device.
2 USB ports to charge two devices... etc.

I don't know how to explain it better.
One USB port on your computer will do power AND data transfer for one device.
You can make one USB port on your computer transfer data for more than one device with a splitter.

But every device you want to charge takes one USB port on your computer OR a wall powered USB charging HUB.

Anyway I have to wind down and go to sleep. Doctor appts. tomorrow. :9

Okay. Got it.

If I can return the second expansion card, I'd like to replace it with the Graugear PCI bracket. I know the speed will be reduced to 10 Gbps, but that's okay. What do you think about doing that?
That is what I would do. Might as well use the motherboard headers.

Like what?

I'm reading about PCIe's and expansion slots.
I had a look at the card in the link you posted. The card should work. You likely won't get optimum speeds but it should work. I'd keep the card.

System boards are made to be versatile. Some builds don't even require a GFX card. Again, it really depends on what you're using your PC for. A graphics card covering a second slot and making it inaccessible is typical. In some cases the bandwidth is transferable depending on the CPU and platform you're using. As to your question, some SATA expansion cards only needs 4X. Sound cards rarely need more than 4X. In many cases simple USB 2.0 and 3.1 cards will do fine in a 4X slot with bandwidth to spare.

What you are evidently trying to achieve is USB 3.2 second gen. Try the card and run some tests and get back to us. Just keep it out of the bottom slot.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
So, is it possible to have a powered hub that 1) connects to the USB C port on the computer to split the data transfer to and from the PC but 2) allows the peripherals to draw power from the wall charger?
AFAIK all powered hubs allow devices to draw power from the powered hub's external power supply or wallwart, but the total amount of power that it can deliver may be limited by its specs. I have this 16 port USB3 hub with a 100W power supply: Amazon.com.be
It's a weapon. Also be aware that different battery powered devices require different charging protocols if fast charging is the goal. There are several, and, Power Delivery (PD) is only one of them. AFAIK none of them are interchangeable in the particular sense that fast charging can be supported though more than one charging protocol. And the maximum amount of power that can be delivered though a port that supports such a charging protocol may also be limited by the actual battery powered device's charging specs.

My Asus laptop supports PD100, but at only 100W this laptop cannot be used such a way that it is capable to achieve high performance modes. For that, I still have to keep the separate 240W brick plugged in to its dedicated power connector (traditional round hole). As a result, PD100 is still essentially a useless feature to me. In theory I could use the PD100 (at the sacrifice of both the port itself and performance) to avoid having to carry the 240W brick around with me wherever I go, but in practice it means that I would have to carry a PD100 power supply with me, which isn't that much more portable so not really worth the added expense (to me, anyway). Another reason I don't need PD is, I am allergic to electronics devices from brands with the name of a fruit.

The PCIe x4 card can't fit into the PCIe x1 slot unless the PCIe x1 slot is open-ended:

Here's how the PCIe 3.0 x1 slot on the MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI looks like:

The Simplecom PCIe 3.0 x4 expansion card:

So, if we can assume that you don't want to pull your GPU out nor want to futz around with a riser cable that would drive the total cost up even further and would still not solve the additional problem of the PCI_E2 slot being limited to only PCIe 3.0 x1 speed (8 Gbps, or ~985 MB/s), you can only install this card in the PCI_E3 slot.

Yup. I stated this about a dozen posts prior. This of course assumes that the diagrams the OP presented are accurate. The actual physical size of the PCIe slots is negligible. On two of my work stations all the slots are X16 size but not all the slots will give me X16 band width. What Tasmania may not know is the reason this is done is because some cards will work with less bandwidth but won't fit into say a X1 slot or a X4 slot. The same applies in the picture that HDMI provided with the open ended X1 slot. The video below might help our friend.

Thanks for everyone's help. Since, for the time being, I'm not in dire need of addition USB-C connectors, I'm going to take a break. I am leaning toward SIW2's suggestion of using the motherboard headers or Ghot's idea of adding a powered USB-C hub.

With all of the discussion about the cards not working, I've already returned them. If that was a mistake, then it's one that's easily remedied at a later time.

I've learned a lot in this experience. Thanks again for everyone sharing their knowledge and experience so freely. All of you are awesome. (y) (y)
