Just curious if many people use PGP? Tell me if I'm in left field. It just seems like a good idea but I sometimes feel like I'm the only one using it. well trying to.

I experimented with email encryption a while ago. I used it for file encryption until I felt safe using something "easier."

Heck, it's hard to convince people to use secure messaging (an easier alternative), let alone something that needs configurations which are not supported on the most common clients.

Encrypted volumes: VeraCrypt & BitLocker. Encrypted files: 7-Zip, Windows EFS. Email encryption: never. Any kind of messaging encryption, in order of preference: Signal, WhatsApp, and FB Messenger (many already have this).

Thanks. What got me thinking of all this is that it seems the service providers can still decode what you are sending. I don't have anything to hide just it's still not something I want them doing. And so I find myself spinning on this from time to time.

I am not familiar with the browser extensions that might allow you to encrypt/decrypt emails, but I am pretty sure Thunderbird, if it still supports PGP, would encrypt your email on the client; the email providers aren't going to see the unencrypted email (except the headers).

AFAIK, secure messaging apps are the same: E2EE, with encryption/decryption done on the client, so the service providers only see the unencrypted metadata.
