Solved Playing YouTube videos in Media Player Classic (MPC)

Hello!

I know this is not a Windows 11 issue, but I post here to make sure some good fellow can help me, other forums are slow to respond. Up until recently, you could download youtube-dl, copy it to the Media Player Classic folder, and then open the YouTube video by copying the URL from your browser and pasting to the Open dialog box. But there is some recent change in YouTube and now this method produces an error that it was unable to extract uploader ID or similar. I already know I can use VLC instead, but I prefer MPC, so please don't tell me that. Unfortunately, updating youtube-dl is not an option since I already have the latest version of 2021. Is there any alternative to youtube-dl that I can add to MPC and work? Thank you.

I was using Media Player Classic until they stopped, then I switched to a fork called Media Player Classic - Black Edition.
I think MPC-BE has youtube-dl already integrated because when I open YouTube links, they just open and play.

I downloaded Media Player Classic Black Edition (MPC-BE) and yes, it can play YouTube videos. I then had a look in its settings and found out that it uses yt-dlp to play YouTube videos: GitHub - yt-dlp/yt-dlp: A youtube-dl fork with additional features and fixes So I downloaded yt-dlp, copied to MPC folder and run it as Administrator to register. After that I can again open YouTube videos in the original MPC by copy-pasting the URL in the Open dialog box. Mission accompliced!

PS: The file yt-dlp.exe is 64-bit only. For 32-bit Windows 10 or earlier you must download yt-dlp_x86.exe instead, copy to MPC folder and rename to yt-dlp.exe to work.

I actually didn't know that. I thought MPC-BE just works with YT videos.

Sometimes I prefer old 4:3 videos to fill the screen, not have black bars left and right (pillar boxed). So I copy the video URL and paste in Media Player Classic where I have the stretch option enabled. It is also a convenient way to skip ads.

Hi. Regarding MPC BE and downloading YT videos-- this works, but it saves the audio/video files separately. They play together in MPC but not other players, and I'd like to be able to play audio/video at same time in other players. Is there an easy way to tweak this program through the settings, or adding a file, that would cause it to download the video with the audio already combined?

If not, what's the easiest/ quickest way to combine the files? Thanks.

Thank you very much! What are the steps to imbed this into the program? I.e. do I just put it into the MPC-BE folder? And, do I have to change something in the options for it to recognize it's there?

You can download the latest version of yt-dlp and then copy-paste into the C:\Program Files (x86)\K-Lite Codec Pack\MPC-HC folder. I am not sure if you need only the yt-dlp.exe file or the yt-dlp file as well, so I download and copy both, just in case. I guess the same way works for MPC-BE. Then you load MPC-HC and from File menu select Open File/URL. Here is were you paste the YouTube URL you copied from your browser. It also works with Dailymotion videos. Once you open the file you can go to File menu and select Save a copy to download it. You only have to type the desired file name, the extension .mp4 is added automatically. If you don't type a filename it will take the description from YouTube. This file plays and opens in any application can read .mp4 videos. This means you can convert it to another format. The only disadvantage is that it is saved at the maximum quality, you don't choose (unless probably if you run yt-dlp.exe directly in Command Prompt, haven't tried it) and that you open one video at a time, you cannot open a playlist. Also I came across a couple of URL that could not be opened (error message "Cannot render the file" or similar), probably some weird format it couldn't handle.

MPC-HC can play anything with the appropriate codecs. That's why I install the K-Lite Codec Pack, not MPC-HC directly. It is just a little tricky to configure LAV Video decoder and MadVR for smooth playback of HD video on older computers. If I am in a hurry, I use VLC for smooth playback and I can take my time to configure MPC-HC later.

PS: I tried to download the appropriate files from VVCEasy to make VLC play VVC encoded videos (aka h.266) but it crashes when I try to open one. MPC-HC plays them fine with a modified version of LAV filters. Latest versions of LAV filters, included with K-Lite Codec Pack include support for VVC encoded videos.

I have been using K-Lite Codec Pack over the past 15 years or almost.

Before K-Lite codec pack (Windows 7 or maybe Vista era), I remember trying to install a lot of individual codecs to make Windows Media Player play most video formats. Of course this was very difficult and not always successful. Then I discovered K-Lite Codec Pack and MPC-HC that can play everything! MPC-HC with the classic skin is almost the same as Windows Media Player 6 and I liked that. So the best combination.
