I don't know what I have done! I must have pressed some key-combination I think.

Now, whenever I press numlock, scrolllock, capslock, etc. a giant white icon appears for 1 second or so at the top of the screen. Very distracting.

I have tried finding out what is going on on Google, but haven't find anything except people saying it has to do with people's graphics card. But this happened all of a sudden while I was typing and using the computer.

I thought maybe it had to do with toggle keys, but I think that only has to do with a beep sound coming whenever you press those buttons. Only, I THOUGHT it had gone away when I first turned off "toggle keys" in control panel under "ease of access"\"make it easier to use keyboard", but maybe I am misremembering things, because it is still happening.

Does anybody know this feature, or have an idea of how to turn it off?

Thank you.

Hi Subhuti, welcome to the ElevenForums 🙏

See if this helps

(OLD)

Press the Windows key on the keyboard and select Settings.
Click System.
Choose Display and click Advanced display settings.
Scroll down and select Display adapter properties.
Click on Screen configurations tab. In Properties window, make sure Enable on-screen display is un-checked. Under "Indicator settings for NumLock and CapsLock" section, look for "While the numeric lock or caps lock is on" section, choose the "Un-check show the indicator for a few seconds" option.

If that doesn’t help, Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app. Click on "Accessibility" in the left sidebar. Scroll down and click on "Keyboard" in the Accessibility menu. Toggle off the "Show the Caps Lock on-screen notification" option

I've started seeing the same thing in the last few days in both Windows 10 & Windows 11.
Such indicators used to be controlled by utilities supplied by the computer maker but it's happening on all my computers [from different makers] and none of them have had any OEM-related updates for ages.
I've been seeing multiple indicators on one computer.

I have not found a way of turning them off either.

Choose Display and click Advanced display settings.
I don't have Advanced display settings
I haven't got any Show caps lock settings either.

Have you tested it yet?

Oh, and welcome to ElevenForum.

It's really worth making time to browse through the ElevenForum Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every ElevenForum page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the ElevenForum Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- ElevenForum tutorials are also listed at Tutorials and there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
- You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,
Taskbar setup site:elevenforum.com
- [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of ElevenForum webpages does automatically]

For MSOffice problems search in and, if necessary, create threads in the TenForums MSOffice section [ElevenForum does not have one].

Thank you for your helpfulness. I tried these things. I had seen the first suggestion on Google, but it did not work.

When I open my display adapter properties, there IS no "Screen configuration" tab. Only "monitor" and "color management."

Going to the "accessibility"\"keyboard" menu, there is no option for "Show the caps lock on-screen notification". I wish there was!

The icon's I am seeing look exactly like the one's "Try3" have shown on the his posted screenshot.

I have heard "Lenovo" mentioned on Google, but my computer is an Acer.

The only thing I have done is stopped some Acer background apps running last night. But the stuff with the Icons happened only this afternoon while I was typing. I think I must have accidentally hit a key-combination?

Or MS has installed some new update in the background which has made this change?

I REALLY would like to get rid of it!

Could be a logitech options/software option. Do you use Logitech software, Subhuti?

No, not that I am aware of. I have a Logitech mouse, but I have not actively installed drivers for it. I don't know what Windows does in the background. What could Logitech have to do with it?

I found the problem, I think! Apparently, it DOES have to do with 3rd party software!

I was rummaging around the system last night, trying to shut down some 3rd party background apps, and I ran across something called Acer "Quick Access". To find out what it did, I ran an executable called QALauncer.exe in the c:\Program Files\Acer\ folder, and nothing happened. No menu appeared and no new icon in the taskbar, so I figured I had run some executable not meant for the user to execute.

Just some minutes ago, I went into Windows Task Manager to see what 3rd party apps might be running, and I saw four Acer apps, which surprised me as I thought I had stopped them in the Registry.

For instance, I saw:

QAAdminAgent.exe
QAAgent.exe
QASvc.exe

Now, I knew I had stopped QASvc in the registry. But I tried ending the QAAdminAgent.exe, and lo and behold: no more icons on screen when I pressed caps-lock! Yea!

I then logged out of Win and back in, and still no icons. And no Acer processes were running.

I tried running QALauncher.exe again, and the icons reappeared, and all three processes mentioned above were back running.

I then tried ending the QAAgent.exe process, and that also stopped the icons from appearing.

So... I guess this must have been the reason? But as to why I never noticed it before this afternoon, I have no explanation. Hadn't I tried pressing numlock or capslock for all those hours? I guess maybe not?

Thanks for the inspiration of you making suggestions!

So to others experiencing this problem, maybe they can also look in task manager to see if some 3rd-party processes are running, and maybe try to delete them one by one, and see if they get lucky and find the one which is responsible for the icons?

I too had this on my Acer. I used Autoruns from Sysinternals to remove the startup entry for QAAgent.exe

I found the problem

Your post inspired me to check everything over again and it turns out that I am a complete prat.

I bought some replacement mice from Dell.
Windows update said there was a Dell driver update.
I ran that update on every computer and it turned out not to be driver but a Dell peripheral manager utility that can set customised click actions for the mouse wheel.
In addition to its menu, there is a Settings button which I had not looked at properly.
I've turned off its Enable lock key notifications and the upper of my two posted notification icons has disappeared.

This was the only one on my Dell laptop so that is back to normal now.
I'll work my way through the other computers later.

That’s a Lenovo Caps lock indicator image as far as I understand it.
@antspants Do you know anything about what generates the indicator icon on Lenovos?

I think, since the Dell icon is the same as my Acer icon that both are using some Windows feature.

I no longer get any indicator on my Dell [or my HP].

I’ll have to revisit that, Denis. I believe it is an icon type style sheet, I forget what they call them, I used to use them when creating websites. (having a blank moment) I’ll check my Lenovo.
