Do you have PNG files associated with any graphics program such as paint?

Right click any PNG file, select Properties and select "Open With" select Paint or your preferred application, after that you should get thumbnails displayed.

You have .png associated with the FastStone Image Viewer, that's its icon you're seeing. Try removing the file association, maybe changing it to Photos.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I tried switching to multiple different programs of pictures, but the results are still the same. But PNG thumbnails are shown in Explorer; only open dialogs are like icons.

Have you tested with another local user account? Assuming it's okay with another account, it may help to reset your folder views. You can start by trying the Reset Folders button in Folder Properties.

If that makes no difference, then I would completely clear all saved views. You can do that by deleting the following registry keys and restarting Explorer (or sign out/in):

HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU
HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags

Or you use WinSetView to set your preferred default views. When you click Submit in WinSetView, it also completely clears out the current saved views.

I will try, but before I notice 1 difference. After I made 3 PNGs with PHOTOSHOP, 2 of 3 PNGs appeared. Now if all 3 appear, it will solve my problem, but why only 2, and 3rd one didnt even export was same, maybe those PNGs that I downloaded from Freepik are missing some info? What do you guys think ? Thanks.

Maybe Photoshop is providing the shell extension for PNG thumbnails on your computer and that's just not working correctly. I'm thinking my previous instructions might not help. If it were me, I'd verify that I get thumbnails with those PNG files on another computer (or VM) to try to determine if Photoshop is the problem.

Do the thumbnails work if you move the files to a folder that's not within your user folders? For example, try creating a folder off the root of drive C: such as C:\PNG and move them there.

I try on C:\PNG and it's the same.
I try on another PC, and PNG thumbnails are shown there; only difference is that my other PC is Windows 10, the one where i have problem is 11
And I'm trying your previous solution and will let you know. Thanks. What was strange for me is why 2 of 3 created PNGs show thumbnails—a very strange problem!

Answer to all your suggestions
I try all of your suggestions but unfortunately it is still the same
Try on C:\PNG—no thumbnails
On another PC those PNG thumbnails are ok , so PNG structure seems to be ok
Reset folders via explorer dialog
Reset all via WinSetView
Deleted the registry BAGMRU and BAGs , but there was 1 other remain called MuiCache that I didnt touch
Now, only another local account worked and has PNG thumbnails, so it's something related to the system or registry.
Changing to another local user will take me tons of time for PC configurations due to my type of profession and work.
Is there any other option that yo
Fast-Stone-Editor1.png
u can suggest? How is possible 1 thumbnail to be shown and others not!?

Ok, I finally found the problem. I start uninstalling software according to the last installed date, and after I uninstall Google Drive, thumbnails come back. I just decide to share so we can help others in this case and say thanks to all that participate in this thread. Regards,

PS To be more precise, uninstalled Google Drive with Revo Uninstaller that will delete leftovers also, then installed again bcz i use it alot , and still working fine, thumbnails are shown, so for future users, do this with Google Drive or One Drive. All the best
