The 7.x family is not called Windows PowerShell; it's just PowerShell. Used to be called PowerShell Core, because it was based on .NET Core. .NET dropped the "Core," so PowerShell followed. This is the (by default) black* PowerShell.

Windows PowerShell is the 5.x version built into Windows. The blue one*.

Edit: * I guess with Terminal, you don't get the blue PowerShell anymore. :::sad trombone:::

I wonder why there are limitations downloading from the Microsoft Store. I never knew there were any. The limitations listed would never apply to me, so for now I'll continue as I always have been.

I always prefer to get my apps from the Microsoft Store because of the auto-update feature, but I will now check each app I download for any known limitations.

Store apps are not allowed to write to the root folder for the application itself. In the case of the PowerShell Store app, that would be C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.PowerShell_whatever_whatever. There are some commands (listed in Almighty1's post) that have to write to this directory. So on a Store version of PowerShell, that's a no go. On a classic, MSI-based install, the path is C:\Program Files\PowerShell\7. As long your account has permissions, you can run those commands and update the content in those folders.

I should mention that you can enable the MSI-installed PowerShell to update with Windows Update, but those updates sometimes take up to two weeks to show up in WU after they are released to GitHub. Oy. 😥

I should mention that you can enable the MSI-installed PowerShell to update with Windows Update, but those updates sometimes take up to two weeks to show up in WU after they are released to GitHub. Oy. 😥

Yes, I should say it could be a gt Store decides what version to give yood or bad thing. Depending on the software, sometimes I prefer manual updates because sometimes there can be problems with the updated version and there is no way to downgrade since Microsoft Store will only download and install one version while with the MSI, you can always grab the older MSI and install. And ofcourse the other reason is sometimes it will not even update for weeks to months as anything going through the Store will need to be reviewed first and then enabled for downloading, not to mention if the app should stop being available, you won't be able to install or update it.
