Windows 11 Home Version 25H2 26200.8328
I recently upgraded our 2 x Win 11 PC's to v24H2 26100.6584, now windows security on both PC's keeps asking for Network Credentials when trying to view files/folders on either PC.
I have no clue as to what the password is for the credentials on either PC, everything is the same for both PC's except that one PC's credentials were changed recently on 14/08/2025.

Any help would be appreciated.

I recently upgraded our 2 x Win 11 PC's to v24H2 26100.6584, now windows security on both PC's keeps asking for Network Credentials when trying to view files/folders on either PC.
Starting with 24H2 network security has been tightened up. Insecure guest logons are now disabled by default. This caught a lot of people out, particularly those who had been connecting in 23H2 with local accounts that had no password.

By default Windows will try to connect with the username and password that you are signed in with on this PC. If that account exists on the remote computer and has the same password then you will connect. If not, then you will be asked for credentials. The account you use to connect must have a password, an account with no password is treated as an insecure connection and will be rejected.

There are two ways to cope with this in 24H2.

The first is to connect to the remote computer using the name and password of a user account that exists on that computer.

When connecting as another user you will have the opportunity to remember these credentials for the next time you connect. You can, if you wish, create a new local account on that remote computer specifically for this purpose. When connected you will have the permissions of that remote account, so you may need to grant it access to those folder you wish it to see.

The second way it to enable insecure logons in 24H2. You will need to do this both on the remote computer (for incoming connections) and the computer that's trying to connect (allow outgoing insecure connections).

See my post here for more details:
Copying executable files from a network drive? - post #12

For myself, I used the first method when I first upgraded to 24H2 and found I could no longer connect to some of my shares.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Go to Control Panel>Credentials> Windows Credentials>add a windows credential

In the "Internet or network address" box, type the name of the other computer on the network that you want to access.
In the User name and Password boxes, type the user name and password that you use for that computer, and then click OK.
Note: It must be a password, not a pin.

Note:Each computer should have a credential for each of the other computers it wants to share files from/to...even if the same username and password is used on them all. This includes even if the same MS account is used on them all.
