I've been using NVidia driver 566.36 for my RTX 2060 Super GPU which has been fine. Today I updated to version 576.52 which caused my PC to hang on switching from my user account to my admin account and then back to my user account. After rebooting a couple of times my desktop PC then failed to boot. I've just recovered from my Reflect backup made earlier today and all is OK. I won't be trying 576.52 again!

I hear you, that same driver borked the Modern Standby S0 sleep mode for my machine. Screen would no longer wake up after sleep and would then BSOD. After consulting with Dell tech support who suspected the graphics drivers I reverted back to the Dell factory drivers and the issue was resolved. I'm currently on NVIDIA 572.90 from the Dell support site for my RTX 5080.

    Mostly used for photo retouching software & some video slideshows.
I have a 3060ti card that works just fine the way it is (572.83) and since Nvidia has had a lot of issues writing stable drivers to accommodate the 50 series cards, I'm staying put. If at any time I see a real need to update with no issues with older cards, then maybe.

Nope.

I'm a typical low-end user: I don't maintain separate admin and user accounts.

I won't, at the moment, create a user account to test it.

Not exactly a surprise, after 25 years of using Nvidia graphics there is no way I ever install latest drivers.
A 5 YO graphics card won't gain anything. Drivers are primarily released for the latest Graphics chipsets.
The rate of drivers has increased to what looks like 2 per month which is ridiculous.
The dubious drivers will go if you look later. There are also studio drivers.
The Release Notes PDF says it all.

not everyone reads this :-)
My own experience says that very few laptops have OEM customized graphics drivers and they are the exception to the rule. The rule is that you can safely install the official graphics drivers from Intel or nVidia or AMD to gain all features that might not be offered by the manufacturer or the Windows Update driver. Also I have frequently seen the manufacturer simply offering an older version of the official chip drivers. Why use an older version and not the latest (if there are no issues)? I choose to use the latest. I lately use the latest Studio drivers for my nVidia GTX 1050 Ti because I want better performance in video editing. I don't play demanding games.

exactly right

@spapakons
because I've tried some newer versions before, and finally I reverted to default (572.62). The latest driver may be better, but it's not as stable as updating from the OEM manufacturer. The update is indeed long, maybe OEM manufacturers need to adjust their systems/driver again. That's my opinion, maybe not everyone experiences this, but there are also some cases that say like this
