Program compatibility - where are the limits?

We all have our favourite utilities that have made Win 10 work more as we want- but which ones push the boundaries?

1. Stardock's Curtains - incompatible
Speaking of boundaries... the frame has changed.. (think rounded corners) - and Stardock's Curtains, which I use on Win 10 as shown:

is definitely not compatible with Win 11.

2. Added buttons in the title bar - compatible
I use these to add 'On top' and favourite and recent folder lists in many dialogues, apps and of course file explorer - as you can see in the above. Does this still work in Win 11? I tried a neat free program - eXtraButtons, and purely out of curiosity also tried its transparency feature:

3. Stardock's Windowblinds - presently incompatible
Not tried this myself- I believe Edwin mentioned this.

4. Stardock's IconPackager - presently incompatible
- mostly no effect at all- after reverting, the Recycle bin icon changed to a yellow file explorer icon until I restarted, when all was as it was again.

It's up to the "add-ons" developers to keep their software up to date to make it work with windows, the code has officially only been in the wild for a few days. I'm sure they will all be working feverishly to recode their software to adapt it to work with Windows 11.

There are of course some developers who will use this release to make money, make a Windows 11 compatible version but make this a chargable upgrade as "the two operating systems are widely different from each other"

there has been a lot of this false information used to drive sales in past upgrade cycles, I remember well the switch from XP to Vista where some developers had to sell the user new software whilst others just recoded and supplied free updates .

There are some manufactures hardware that I used to use and specify for years but have not used or specced since the Vista Launch

Plus, ISTR somewhere that the taskbar is completely outside of the scope of Explorer in the Win11 from where it is located in 10 and older Windows. So it may take some serious retooling for any / all taskbar-based apps / add-ons / mods to start working in Win11 again.

Now, I'm remembering what I read, and I could very well be wrong - but it makes sense, seeing that it has 0 context menu items other than taskbar settings, unlike in 10.

Qttabbar- Coloured backgrounds - oh, and File explorer ribbon

Qttabbar with my settings imported from Win 10.. and yes, apparently works.

Following the procedure to enable Qttabbar (which is now more awkward, as the toolbar options are only available after a bit of a fiddle as per this rather too-fast video:

Note the familar ribbon is back as a result of using Windows settings as per the video (nothing to do with Qttabbar).

However: whilst in Win 10 I could readily change non-explorer window background colours with a simple well-known registry change, merging the same reg file I use on Win 10 has no effect in Win 11.

(E.g. Notepad, Wordpad....)

Hi folks

This old program (WINAMP) still working perfectly (I also like it for tagging Classical music as it uses GRACENOTE CDDB which is a lot better for that type of music than some of the Free music DB's). Also has a nice visual equaliser !!

@Bree Does PSP 7.04 work? That's the one I'm really concerned about.

Maybe, unless it interacts with the taskbar or start menu.

LOL ...... Not everything that works on Windows 10 will work on 11, although most all the software I have on my system running 11 that was on 10 works right now ..... as far as I can tell.

Anything that modifies the way the system looks, ie: Stardock Products or any third party themes or skins probably will not ..... just yet

CS 6 is Photoshop

I'm talking about Paintshop Pro. Bree runs PSP 7.0x

Just as a heads up - all of my 'hardware' utilities are working fine on 22000.51:

MSI Center
NZXT CAM
SteelSeries GG

Plus, utilities like:

MSI Afterburner
Nahimic 3 (with RealTek drivers)
KeePassXC
VLC Player
WSCC
Xplorer²

Yes, PSP 7.04 was installed on the machine(s) I have tested upgrading to 22000.51. It worked fine. In fact, I have yet to find anything that has a problem after upgrading from 10 to 11.

According to the stardock forums everything works except start 10 has issues

I tried Curtains and IconPackager.. unsuccessful. Just searched Stardock Forums and found little... but this refers to WindowBlinds and IconPackager not working with Win 11.

Classic W7 games (Spider solitaire etc) still work on this release of W11 (the July latest one) - Great for passing time at boring meetings !!!!!.). You can get those games by using the winaero tweaker if you didn't have them installed on W10 before update to W11.

WACUP also has a Beta version that you simply have to register on their forum and send a PM to the dev to get added to the Beta testing list - last release was .. uh, 4 days ago.

I've been using WACUP for several months, nad it still has issues - but mostly cosmetic ones. Playback is perfectly fine, and if you look in the install dir you'll see the last WinAMp release executable there too.
