RAM price increases ripple effects on other companies

If people aren't going to buy new systems how does that affect companies like Intel and AMD? Nvidia?

Microsoft: If people are keeping their current systems longer, what if anything does that mean for Windows 12, which is rumored to be very AI-oriented?

i have made my system as future proof as i can they are now about 3 years old and i maxed everything out
that could be maximised, RAM and NVMe Drives and with a more powerful CPU then i need.
thats about it for any upgrades on these systems and will hang on to them, for me and the wife, for as long as possible.

my backup laptop i refurbished and maxed out an old second hand DELL 13" latitude
which runs Linux so will be keeping that for some years yet just for backup use.

i beleive the more MS push AI which will require higher system specs the more people will be looking for alternatives
but i also get the feeling the AI bubble is going to burst and bring some of these big companies down to earth.
at the moment all the big players are in an AI frenzy they see nothing above and beyond AI.

the knock on effect is prices for systems and system parts are going to rise massively and force people
to hang on to systems maybe push people to the used component market or change operating systems
that they are able to use for general day to day use. people are not going to stop using computers
they are just going to change the way they use them which may very well push them along other avenues.

I completely agree. There are always going to be those that think they have to have the newest, best, and most powerful but for my needs, I'm not one of them. And I think I am the norm, not the exception. I've already started tinkering with one of those other avenues and have seen enough to say, with a little adjustment, my needs will be met just fine using all this old hardware that I have, and I've accumulated enough spare parts to keep 4 systems running as long as I have left.

No way would I pay the prices being demanded now. So far, the used market prices haven't started reflecting the huge increase of the new component market, but it's only going to be a short while until it does. I just bought a used system for the nvme drive it had in it. The entire working system cost less than what Amazon was asking for the exact same drive. I ended up with 32gb of extra ram too that just so happens to work in 2 of mine. So yeah. We regular users will find ways to adapt, if we're smart and flexible.

I have suggested several times in other posts/topics about this but unless something pops soon this is going to create havoc within the PC industry. SSD prices have already started to trend upwards in pricing. GPU prices are expected to begin rising. AMD has said they are going to raise the price of their Processors but that's simply due to greed on their part because they have basically killed Intel and can charge whatever they want. All this pricing backlash will eventually cause motherboard manufacturers to see a sales drop due to increased costs of building new systems. No new systems means slower hardware case sales, power supply sales, and on and on.
And guess I feel a little different about the used market than glasskuter is suggesting. I need to go look at eBay and check RAM prices.

The ram i purchased in September (G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB Kit (2x32GB) DDR5-6000 C30) for $405 AUD is now $1599 AUD.

I wish. I think that Intel still has bigger market shares than AMD. Speaking as an long time AMD CPU customer.

In other words, large segments of the PC component industry will suffer, badly.

And if SKHynix or SamSung decides to slow down on RAM production, then we will all be in deep kimchi. And then I won't upgrade my rig until after 2030.
