Insider Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 begins rolling out to Windows Insiders

  • Staff
UPDATE 1/5/2022: We have begun rolling out the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are beginning to roll out the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

The Notepad app logo.

We are very excited to introduce to all of you the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11, which includes a number of changes we think the community will enjoy! First, you will notice a completely updated UI that aligns with the new visual design of Windows 11, including rounded corners, Mica, and more. We know how important Notepad is to so many of your daily workflows, so we designed this modern spin on the classic app to feel fresh, but familiar.

Our favorite new feature is dark mode. This has been a top community ask, and we hope you love this gorgeous new theme as much as we do. By default, Notepad will adapt to your system theme preferences, but you can change this option yourself in the brand-new settings page which is the new home for font options as well.

To help you be more productive, we are introducing a redesigned find and replace experience and are also adding support for multi-level undo โ€“ another top community feature request.

Productivity, performance, and reliability are paramount in Notepad. Regardless of how you incorporate Notepad into your workflows, we will ensure that Notepad continues to excel in those areas. In the preview version we are releasing today, there are a number of known issues that we will be addressing in future updates. This includes issues affecting keyboard access keys usage for when switching between different input languages or while using Japanese IME, and under certain circumstances, you may notice unexpected behavior when using shift-click to select text or when scrolling. We are also continuing to improve performance for when opening very large files.

We would love to get your feedback about the redesigned Notepad experience, so please share your suggestions in Feedback Hub (under Apps > Notepad).

Thanks,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Program Manager Lead โ€“ Windows Inbox Apps

Sounds as if "improvements" are mostly cosmetic, which is nothing worth crowing about. Surprised they didn't add something really useful in Notepad such as new emojis.

Sure it can: just hit Winkey + . (period) and the new, wunnerful, amazing emojis will majerkly appear. Wowzers!:rolleyes::sleep:

Edit: Sorry, they're just pseudo-emojis. Not the jennuwine fool-color actual thingies.

Indeed, this version of Notepad is not yet available in the MS Store for users of Beta and Release Preview channels. But I doubt that such small changes in UI require the platform update (currently Dev channel is far ahead of Beta). Well, I prefer to wait for its arrival in the store for Beta or maybe for all. As for me, current Notepad 10.2103.12.0 isn't as bad, especially for users who like traditional light theme, is it?

Hmmm. I know how to call for emojis.. but it didn't work before. Maybe not all of them stick, and cursor has to be in Notepad

Mine's actually 10.2103.9.0, so maybe an ability to show proper emoji was added in the version upgrade from mine to yours, Slavic.

Edit: The emojis are available in 11 348, but they don't "take" in my version of Notepad; they're just the older, primitive ones.

Hi folks
Am I the only person on this planet who isn't obsessed with "Dark Mode". Sometimes trying to read some shades of Blue / purple / light reds on a black background (beloved it seems by an increasing number of websites) it's almost impossible and I have good eyesight and excellent monitors. - And I am checked regularly for colour blindness as I have a PPL (Private Pilots License) which requires annual tests to keep the license.

Cheers
jimbo
