Insider Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 begins rolling out to Windows Insiders

  • Staff
UPDATE 1/5/2022: We have begun rolling out the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel.

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are beginning to roll out the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

The Notepad app logo.

We are very excited to introduce to all of you the redesigned Notepad for Windows 11, which includes a number of changes we think the community will enjoy! First, you will notice a completely updated UI that aligns with the new visual design of Windows 11, including rounded corners, Mica, and more. We know how important Notepad is to so many of your daily workflows, so we designed this modern spin on the classic app to feel fresh, but familiar.

Our favorite new feature is dark mode. This has been a top community ask, and we hope you love this gorgeous new theme as much as we do. By default, Notepad will adapt to your system theme preferences, but you can change this option yourself in the brand-new settings page which is the new home for font options as well.

To help you be more productive, we are introducing a redesigned find and replace experience and are also adding support for multi-level undo – another top community feature request.

Productivity, performance, and reliability are paramount in Notepad. Regardless of how you incorporate Notepad into your workflows, we will ensure that Notepad continues to excel in those areas. In the preview version we are releasing today, there are a number of known issues that we will be addressing in future updates. This includes issues affecting keyboard access keys usage for when switching between different input languages or while using Japanese IME, and under certain circumstances, you may notice unexpected behavior when using shift-click to select text or when scrolling. We are also continuing to improve performance for when opening very large files.

We would love to get your feedback about the redesigned Notepad experience, so please share your suggestions in Feedback Hub (under Apps > Notepad).

Thanks,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Program Manager Lead – Windows Inbox Apps

I always set monitor brightness to 50% and game brightness as well, otherwise I would get a headache within an hour.
(y)
If I use Light Mode I'll be snow blind for an hour!
My fonts are huge so, Dark Mode works okay for me...

I wear blue light blocking glasses. They seem to help to greatly eliminate eyestrain and avoid headaches. Plus, I look learned! 👓
I wear prescription glasses and had blue light filtering put in one of them for my computer glasses. Seems to help with the eye fatigue although everything has a bit of a yellow tint that you'll notice whenever you remove your glasses lol. Big fan of dark mode for everything as bright white backgrounds cause to much eye fatigue for me even with my monitors set at 50% brightness. Also to much bright light for long periods tend to trigger my migraines.

Would it be too much to ask for the left hand to talk to the right hand occasionally?

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Heheh, one of the reasons I've turned off protected folder access. ALL apps and processes that need access to the folders must be given access exclusively.

That would be about 100 tools to add to the list. 😂

There is a lot of padding around the edges of the new Notepad.
Even halving the amount of padding would still be too much.

Here's a weirdo for ya...

since uninstalling the new Notepad, I can still open the native one, I can add content and save it...

000800.png

... but, it won't adhere to the Open with... protocol...

000799.png

... yet, it still registers a null protocol in the Open with context menu!!! 🤷‍♂️

I've used Editpad Lite for ages and like it. Windows Text Editor Free Download
I'm revisiting EditPad Lite after many years of using AkelPad.
There is something basic that I cannot work out how to do.

I have worked out how to open a new tab by double clicking on the tab bar, but I am unable to open multiple tabs without first editing the previous tab. That is very restrictive for my usage.

Do you know how to overcome the new tab restriction?

Just for comparison!

I love the left ones, specifically the last left (crazy about it! IMO the best Office UI design which Microsoft ruined it in new "Fresh UI") :woozy:

The new UI is just full of blank spaces (needs more room on screen). Microsoft has got stuck somewhere between Sky and Earth (should make it better for new "Touch" users/devices or old "Geeks").

Microsoft Office 2022 new "Super Fresh UI". Most minimalistic, fresh, sleek, new and different UI in the world. You can run another Windows 11 inside it without any VM too.

Yeah, the GUIs are ridiculous on all the new apps.
Have a look at the new paint and all the wasted space.

I think Microsoft is thinking that Windows users are all geriatrics.
Either that, or very young children.

Who votes for a BIGGER close button? :weary:

Yeah, the GUIs are ridiculous on all the new apps.
Have a look at the new paint and all the wasted space.

I think Microsoft is thinking that Windows users are all geriatrics.
Either that, or very young children.

:woozy:
IMHO, MS is back to the mobile and touchscreen state of mind like they were with Windows 8. I'll use the touchscreen on my phone, I'll occasionally use the touchscreen on my laptop, but I refuse to use a touchscreen on my desktops.
