Redesigned Paint app for Windows 11 begins rolling out to Windows Insiders

  • Staff
Hello Windows Insiders, today we are beginning to roll out the redesigned Paint app for Windows 11 to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

The redesigned Paint app for Windows 11 is a modern spin on the classic app. You will notice a completely updated UI that matches the new visual design of Windows 11. Paint’s new design includes rounded corners, Mica, and more!

The most prominent change to Paint is the newly simplified toolbar with updated icon designs, a rounded color palette, and a new set of drop-down menus for tools such as brushes, stroke size, and flip/rotate controls.

The new drop-down menu for brushes features a dynamic icon that changes depending on which brush you have chosen.

Beyond updated icons and dropdown menus, we’ve included a new text tool for you to try. To access the tool, click on the “A” icon in the toolbar.

The new text tool lets you easily add text into your images.

Look out for future updates to the Paint app where we plan to address your feedback with improvements including dark theme, a centered canvas, and updated dialogs which have yet to be updated with the app’s new design.

Thanks,
Dave Grochocki, Principal Program Manager Lead – Windows Inbox Apps

Sigh - yet again - another cosmetic change with no real improvements to aid usefulness.

Unfortunately, the updated Paint is not available for Beta channel, I see in the Store only the infamous Paint 3D... Not a big problem for Beta insiders, you may say, they should be able to update it a bit later when current Dev build will become more stable and move to Beta. Maybe so, but the problem is, current Beta is almost (or exactly) the same as upcoming Windows 11 release, so if nothing will be changed on MS side, the users of release version will not be able to update their Paint app much longer than we Beta users. Sadly...

So, the new "Paint" is actually Paint 3D?
No, Paint 3D is a separate app which first was included in Windows 10 as a supposed replace of Paint, there was a period when Paint could be downloaded only from the Store, but later MS revised its decision.

But today, before replying your question, I checked update in the Store again and yes, Paint is now available for Beta insiders (at least for me). It has a version 11.2110.0.0 shown in the menu File, Settings which is a bit strange because no any setting is there. I cannot say that I am excited about new 11-style UI, but at least the tabbed Ribbon disappeared and the View menu is independent; it doesn't have zoom buttons, zoom is accessible now only by two buttons and ruler on the status bar; when the status bar is hidden, zoom cannot be changed. I think that some UI improvements still have to be made.

I see absolutely no real value in this updated Paint app. It is more of a regression than progress in my opinion. Can't even hide the toolbar/ribbon anymore...

I am very disappointed. 😞

I try to look at the positives in things, but I just cannot understand the reason for this new design.
I am happy for someone to explain it to me. I will listen.

When I was learning programming back in the day, I would have been marked down for poor use of space.
I guess times have changed.

If you're not sure what I am talking about, compare the new Paint to an Office application.

Another example of how poor this app is, have a look at the File Menu, they cannot even spell scanner correctly.

Yeah, that too. If I move it so far, I think it will stick, but I haven't tried that yet.

Ok... if you move the Z axis till the graph paper goes away... then it will stick.
The Z axis moves the object deeper into the paper.
This was a tube, that I pushed deeper into the paper with the Z axis thingy.

As soon as you go past the turquoise line...it sticks when you let go of the adjuster...
