Devices Rename Bluetooth Device in Windows 11

Bluetooth_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to rename a connected Bluetooth device in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology which enables wireless data transmission between two Bluetooth enabled devices located nearby each other.

When you connect (pair) a Bluetooth device with your Windows 11 device, the default name of the Bluetooth device shown in Windows 11 is not always a friendly name that's useful to easily ID the connected Bluetooth device. Especially if you multiple connected Bluetooth devices with similar default names.

You can rename connected Bluetooth devices to give them a custom name you want to help make it easier to ID them.

It is required to have Bluetooth turned on and connected (paired) for both the Windows PC and Bluetooth device (ex: Android phone) to rename the Bluetooth device.

Not all Bluetooth devices will have a new name saved and remembered.

EXAMPLE: Before and after rename a connected Bluetooth Android phone

Rename_Bluetooth_device_before.png
Rename_Bluetooth_device_after.png

Here's How:

1 Open Devices and Printers.

2 Right click on the Bluetooth device you want to rename, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

Rename_Bluetooth_device-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Bluetooth tab in properties. (see screenshot below)

Rename_Bluetooth_device-2.png

4 Enter a new name you want for this Bluetooth device, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

5 If the new name doesn't apply immediately, then disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth device to your Windows 11 PC.

6 If the new name still hasn't been applied, then restart the computer, and reconnect the Bluetooth device to your Windows 11 PC.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

I have two identical devices that connnect PC to my bluetooth hearing aids. It was a PITA as both devices had same name and if I clicked wring one, pc would get confused and I had to remove both connections and re-pair.

I now have them named differently, and I know which device to select now.

Goood tutorial - short, sweet, effective.

I made an account to thank you. I tried a lot of tips, but this one is the best. I have two Xm4 with identical names. It's nice to know which one to connect to when I have to do it manually (happens sometimes). So thank you!

Worth noting that the Devices and Printers link in the Control Panel is a redirect to Bluetooth in Settings, so a good way to get into that page now is pasting shell:::{A8A91A66-3A7D-4424-8D24-04E180695C7A} into the Run dialog. (Win + R)

Used to be able to personalize the name but it's now not possible anymore on any branch.
The name stayed as a Bluetooth device but not as a mobile device.

This slightly more involved procedure works reliably for me with Bluetooth headphones:

https://www.elevenforum.com/t/rename-a-bluetooth-device-in-24h2.39861/#post-644243

BTW, after five years of fighting the good fight, I've pretty much given up on my PC for Bluetooth audio. I use AirPods Max headphones and AirPods Pro 3 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra earbuds, and after trying internal cards including Intel AX200/210 and MediaTek whatever, external RealTek dongles (including "high power" ones), and a multitude of audio-only transmitters from Avantree, Sennheiser, Creative, Floogoo, and one or two others I can't think of, the best by far was Intel AX210. The audio-only devices all have annoying limitations and quirks compared to "real" Bluetooth and subpar performance with one or more of my headphones. The AX210 with antenna on a 3 foot cable has the best range, but I still get occasional dropouts with my Bose in certain places in my 1000 sq ft apartment, and not necessarily where you'd think.

What am I using now for Bluetooth audio? I'm using my iPad for Apple Music and Music Classical, and I've set up Plexamp for my large local library. It's flawless with all my headphones, no dropouts anywhere, even when running the microwave. My iPhone is just as good. I asked Gemini why Apple devices are performing so much better, and it claimed that they're higher-powered than PC options, and that Apple has much better-optimized wireless tech. Whatever the reason, they're so much better, and that includes with the Bose. I just wish there was a decent free or low cost player for music on a NAS, because Plex can't do simple things like view Composers, which is really quite unbelievable. I tried foobar2000 but couldn't get it to reliably index my music library.

Of course, it sucks that I can no longer hear PC audio while listening to music without at the least stopping playback and turning on aware mode so I can listen through my PC speaker, but it's worth it. I can do those things directly from all my headphones, and when I do need to hear more than a snippet or need decent quality, I can still connect to my PC via the taskbar. I never used the Apple multipoint workalike thing before, but it works well, and it doesn't steal the PC connection. Once connected to the PC, I have to switch back using my Apple devices, and I have shortcuts on their home screens to make that one touch.

I think you misunderstood the post or I explained poorly. My apologies if that is the case.
Either way, there is no issue with the Bluetooth name, it is what I want it to be and it remains that way thru reboots.
But if you look at the screenshot I provided, you will see that the phone name via phone link remains the OM's (left)
while the Bluetooth has the personalized name(right).
The 'non personalized' name is visible in the Start Menu companion panel as well as in the widget for phone link and in Explorer's tree.
This mismatch in names started about 4 builds back and in all branches.

Is it possible that the phone itself is still named that? I'd figure that that isn't the problem, but you never know. It might just not be changeble on phone link.
