This tutorial will show you how to rename a tab title in Windows Terminal for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows Terminal is a modern host application for the command-line shells you already love, like Command Prompt, PowerShell, and bash (via Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)). Its main features include multiple tabs, panes, Unicode and UTF-8 character support, a GPU accelerated text rendering engine, and the ability to create your own themes and customize text, colors, backgrounds, and shortcuts.

By default, the tab title is set to the shell's title. If a tab is composed of multiple panes, the tab's title is set to that of the currently focused pane.

You can rename a tab for the current terminal session, or set the tab title for a profile used for every terminal instance.

Option Two

Set Default Tab Title Applied to All Profiles for All Terminal Instances

You can still use Option One to rename a tab title set by this option.

Setting a default tab title using this option will apply to all profiles unless they are overridden by a profile's setting in Option Three.

1 Open Windows Terminal.

2 Click/tap on the down arrow button on the top bar, and click/tap on Settings Ctrl + , (comma). (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Defaults in the left pane under Profiles. (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap on Tab title to expand it open.

5 Type a name (ex: "My Tab") you want used by default for tab titles for all profiles.

Leaving this field empty is the default setting to use the profile's name as the tab title.

6 Click/tap on Save at the bottom right.

7 You can now close the Settings tab or Windows Terminal if you like.

Option Three

Set Default Tab Title Applied to Specific Profile for All Terminal Instances

You can still use Option One to rename a tab title set by this option.

Setting a default tab title using this option will only apply to the specific profile, and will override Option Two for that profile.

1 Open Windows Terminal.

2 Click/tap on the down arrow button on the top bar, and click/tap on Settings Ctrl + , (comma). (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on a profile (ex: "Windows PowerShell") you want to set a default tab title for in the left pane under Profiles. (see screenshot below)

4 Click/tap on Tab title to expand it open.

5 Type a name (ex: "PowerShell") you want used by default for this profile's tab title.

Leaving this field empty is the default setting to use the profile's name as the tab title.

6 Click/tap on Save at the bottom right.

7 You can now close the Settings tab or Windows Terminal if you like.
