Replacement for OneDrive

I finally purged OneDrive from my main PC and Laptop!
I hated the way it created its own folders (duplicates) and would merge my desktops despite my using settings to block this.
However, I do miss the documents file being replicated between devices, so I have the information during away from home meetings.
Currently I'm emailing them to myself, but surely there is a better way, other than a USB stick?

I am using Macrium Reflect for backups on each device, but I'm not a power user.

Suggestions?

How 'bout some details... what type of devices for the replication (OS is important), how much DATA is involved, are you a GOOGLE user, etc.

OS per profile is W11 and I use Office 365. It's mainly Word and Excel files less than a few MB per week.
I do use have a Google account but haven't explored its full uses.

I've used OneDrive for 20 years and wouldn't be without it.

To have complete control of OneDrive, turn OFF Microsoft Backup and only put in your OneDrive folder the files and folders you want synchronized.

I love that too. I duplicate my OneDrive folder on my System Two for a local real-time backup. All my photos and notes are replicated on all my devices. I love it.

I use Macrium Reflect X and set OneDrive to turn Files On Demand to OFF. That way all my data and photos are kept in sync in both the cloud and locally. When I make my Macrium Reflect images I'm backing up everything.

You are correct about how handy it is (was) ... if you play by its rules.

However, as I mentioned I didn't like the duplication of folders i.e. 2 download folders one under My PC and another under One Drive.
But the killer was my 3 PC's that have different uses (one is basically my server but is close to my 3D printer) have different desktops and despite not allowing them to be replicated - it was a continual problem where OD took control and merged them and since they run under different graphics resolutions it was a mess. Grrrrh :oops:(n)

I'm a bit OCD about the layout of my icons on my 3 desktops .......

I have none of the problems you're talking about. OneDrive will work exactly the way you want, but you must understand how it works and how to use it.

How to stop Desktop from syncing to OneDrive (and duplicating across PCs)
  1. Open OneDrive settings
    • Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar → Settings.
  2. Go to Sync and backup
    • In the left pane, click Sync and backup.
  3. Open Manage backup
    • Under Important PC folders, click Manage backup.
  4. Turn off Desktop backup
    • Find Desktop and switch it Off.
    • When prompted, choose Stop backup (this does not delete files; it just stops syncing that folder).
  5. Repeat on every PC using the same OneDrive account
    • Do the same steps on each machine so Desktop is local on all of them.
  6. Confirm Desktop is now local
    • In File Explorer, right‑click Desktop → Properties → Location.
    • It should show C:\Users\username\Desktop (not inside OneDrive).

Agreed - OneDrive is fine if you know how to configure it.

Hello britgeezer,

I do like TraderGary does , but for the Desktop and the Downloads folder.
My machines have different uses like yours.
On one there is a Desktop full of program shortcuts for music production that I don't want to see on the other and likewise for the Downloads folder.
So they are not backed up and synced to OneDrive.
These two folders are protected by the system backups I do for both machines.
Oh, and as for Onedrive, I keep everything Local and in the cloud of course.

So, there you go.
