Decided it's time to think about moving over to Win 11, my home build Win 10 Pro PC at present is not able to take Win 11 as the current ASUSTeK Computer INC. P8P67 PRO REV 3.1 Rev 1.xx MoBo is no good for Win 11.. I would like to upgrade with a new MoBo that is as close as possible to what I already have. I have 5 external USB drives to connect so USB sockets are needed. Once I have sorted a new MoBo I can then purchase the rest, processor, memory etc.
I am not very technical minded so looking for as simple a swap as possible.

It isn't only the P8P67 PRO that isn't win 11 "compatible". It is also the CPU.
To make it compatible you will have to change the MB, CPU and memory. They must be at least Intel 8th generation.
My wife's computer is a Gigabyte Z68 with a i7 2600K and it is running win 11 very well.
I suggest you make a whole main drive backup image and upgrade to Win 11.
On a Win 10 upgrade you do a In place upgrade with tweaked Win 11 installation files. How to upgrade from Win10 or Win 11 to Win 11 23h2 - A guide
WD My Passport are slow and they aren't reliable. As you have a desktop, why don't you use internal 3.5" HDD?
I can see that you don't have a SSD. With a SSD your computer will boot in seconds (~20sec) rather than in minutes.

It's going to be somewhat tough finding a motherboard with that many USB ports. My initial thought is an Intel Z690 motherboard. They're cheaper now since a little older. Then maybe a 12700 non K CPU. That will give you a 8/16 core cpu.
The USB port issue however can be fixed by utilizing a USB hub. Some other areas you could modernize as well.

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
My advice is first is take your time researching and planning what parts you are going to have to update. I'm a real stick in the mud with system updates and spent nearly 6 months in 2023 planning the upgrade to my current PC. That included reading and viewing lots of component reviews. I ended up replacing nearly everything in the PC apart from a couple of hard drives.

One of those part picker websites may help get you started with all this. Also, if you end up deciding to replace the motherboard/CPU/ram make your current PSU is going to be able to handle your new builds power and connection requirements both now and into the future. Buying PSUs isn't steamy stuff, but I think it is one of most critical decisions when doing significant system upgrades.

Good luck. (y)

Do you have a budget? Performance goals?

The P8P67 has 8 SATA ports. (Not all of them are 6.0 Gbps.) You seem to be using them all. I'd regard that as slightly unusual. But there are current motherboards that have that many.

It's common now for a motherboard to use an NVME M.2 drive as an OS drive. For greatly improved performance. Are you familiar?

The P8P67 has many USB ports. 6 in its rea I/O panel, headers for 6 more, and a USB 3.0 header intended for the front panel. How many do you want? That may be harder to duplicate in a current motherboard.

I haven't found specs for your Corsair PSU. I hope that it has the appropriate power connectors for a newer motherboard. (24 pin main power plug, plus a couple of 8 pin cables for the CPU. Not the same as PCI-E 8 pins for a high-power graphics card.)

A semi-random suggestion: Asrock Z790 Pro RS.

If you wanted another Asus board, most come with 4 SATA ports. Say, an ASUS Prime Z790-P WiFi. (Time to consolidate/discard some of those old HDDs?) Current MBs tend to come with multiple M.2 sockets, rather than SATA ports. Many PC cases of recent design lack slots for optical drives.

For a CPU, maybe a nice Intel I5-13600K.

The US total for the Asrock board and the I5 CPU would be about $430.

Good luck with your upgrade. You may have a fair bit to learn to pull it off. Please don't work from a recipe from anyone. Especially me.

Thank you for you replies, I am in no hurry at the moment. I think it best to take it one step at time, and the first step I reckon is the MoBo as everything else goes from there. I know I will need a new processor and memory amongst other things, a new SSD and maybe a new graphics card.
I don't have a budget as such, I just want a PC that will stay up gradable when needed. When I built this in around 2006 it was on win 7 pro so has done me well.
I have some reading to do so I will be back.
Alan.

Haven't things changed! My PC although running fine is well past its prime!!
Thank you Bobkn for your post, in response: As above I do not have a budget, I would like to install a new MB, Processor and memory connect it all up and then install win 11 over my wn10 Pro and carry on. But I don't think that is going to happen.
I am using all those WD Passport drives because I had them around doing nothing. They were attached to my brothers PC when he passed away so were gathering dust. None of them has failed so far so I could remove 2 or maybe 3 if I deleted a lot of old data and condensed a lot more copied onto one of the others.
I did find this PSU link on the Corsair website:
Gaming Series™ GS800 — 80 PLUS® Certified Power Supply
This, I hope may help to see if it work okay with the new breeds of MB.
I am not sure about installing 11 over 10 using a different method, I understand this is may end up with no later security updates etc. Probably fine if you know what your doing but that is not the case here, as I don't :(
In a perfect world I would copy my C drive to the new M.2 devices (f I read that right) connect every thing up then go down the Pub for a quick pint. If only.
I will still need optical drives as I have many CD's with installation files that may/will be needed later.
I am not after a multiplayer gaming setup, 95% of my use is in data. Office 2010, Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Money and such like, I rarely get the time to do any gaming and that is only on Half-life, RoTT etc for my own amusement when I feel stressed out.

Can I assume I will lose a lot of setup info, I have Digical Calendar on my phone which is synced across this PC my wife's PC and her phone using Caldav synchronizer, and needing to reinstall most sottware?
It seems very frustrating to have replace hardware that is working fine, is that what they call progress??

I guess I need a MB that has WiFi, I thought they all did as so much these days relies on that to connect.
Thanks once again, I must say the help on these forums is exemplary
Alan.

You have to build your computer to your needs.
I suggest a i5 or Rysen 5, a Asus, Gigabyte or MSI MB, a 2T M.2 NVMe SSD, internal graphics and 8+8G of memory. A 600W PS is more than you need.
You can clone the current Win 10 to the M.2 NVMe SSD and then upgrade to Win 11 but I strongly recommend a win 11 clean install.
As you're changing your hardware, you may need to buy a Win 10 or Win 11 license.
Most software that runs on Win 10 will also run on Win 11 but some doesn't so be prepared to buy some up to date.

Been pondering my upgrade fro Win 10 Pro to Win 11.
I have a ‘sort of’ plan but have no idea if it is feasible.
According to Win 11 update, my MB, Processor and Memory need to be replaced before I will be able to install Win 11.
I have Macrium reflect v8, full version paid for.
In my PC I have a 500gb SSD SanDisk Ultra 3D SSD 500 GB with Win 7 Pro on it in a Orico ‘caddy’ so I could boot from that while I added Win 10.
Anyway. I have a 500gb SSD now unused. My HDD C:\ drive according to my ‘properties’ is 930gb used and with 250gb free space.
On my C:\ drive I have my BT backup folder in ’Users’ of 175gb which, come September, will be pretty much useless, I have not downloaded anything from it for a long long time. A lot of it was work stuff that I no longer need. I will find another backup program later.
In the meantime I can move this large BT folder to one of the Passport drives just in case it’s needed…..

So, I have an HDD with 930gb used and 250gb free space. Removing the BT folder of 175gb would leave 495gb a tight squeeze on a 500gb SSD. I can also empty my recycle bin holding 25gb of files.

In my tiny brain I am thinking; if I cloned my C:\ HDD with Macrium Reflect, re-formatted my SSD and put the cloned copy on that. Would it work if I did as MS wants and replaced my MB, Processor and Memory and left the HDD in place and hope Win 10 would then update to 11? If it did I could then swap the HDD for the SSD. If that worked I could buy a 1TB SSD as an upgrade.
IF that idea would work I could just buy the 1TB SSD and use that and keep the 500 SSD for programs and or future files.
Of course nothing is ever straight forward so am probably talking out of the wrong orifice!

IF MS require new components to make the upgrade I assume I will not need a new license as my installed Win 10 Pro should be proof enough for them?

Thank you for your help.

You say you built your current PC in 2006. A couple of other things that often get overlooked. Your monitor, does it have hdmi or display port as most modern graphics cards/mb only have these nowadays. No more DV-I, VGA. What about your mouse and keyboard? You might need USB or even Bluetooth for those as most modern mb don't have the old round wired sockets any more (pity). Just thinking aloud m8 :look:

You could use a work-around to update your current computer to 11. Microsoft has hinted in the past that they might stop updating 11 on unsupported hardware, but, so far, updates continue.

Some really old PCs won't support the forthcoming 24H2 release of 11, which requires a CPU that supports the SSE 4.2 instructions. Your I5-2500K has that.

I'd regard the update on the old hardware as a stopgap measure, but the price would be right. (Free.)

If you're satisfied with its performance under Windows 10, it should be OK under 11. (Probably leave Core Isolation disabled.)

@Trapperr I'm all for upgrading. Why limp along your 2nd gen system with old DDR3 memory?

You can upgrade rather inexpensively. Here's just an example:

Of course you can opt for a motherboard the accepts DDR5 memory if your budget allows.

You'd need a new CPU cooler as well.
