My son is using Chrome on a windows 10 computer. I don't use Chrome so the question is "why does it hog so much memory?" . He hardly games on it and it is the You tube videos that will get is his words "bog down to only having 5% free of memory". He wanted to add to more sticks of 8Gb(2). Could not install one stick because of cooling adapter over hang. He gets real touchy about me repairing his computer.

Chrome high memory usage is by design. All components, like tabs, extensions, plugins and such are treated as their own process. Thus if a tab or extension crashes, it doesn't affect the rest of the browser.

Also chrome uses preloading and prediction features as well to improve performance.....thus taking up additional memory usage.

I have installed additional RAM on computers that necessitated temporary removal of other parts but no issues after putting them back, just have to pay attention to details especially with SFF and UltraSFF cases [have 2 of those with Win10 on hand now].

For those using memory intensive programs and having worked on other things it usually is good to reboot before getting into those things so as to clear out the memory, give big programs a clean start.

I switched from chrome to opera gx which I honestly don't regret at all. I thought it was gimmik but as long as you know what you are doing you get performance + function and fashion.

I've been using the Brave browser for some time, along with Firefox.
For several reasons I decided to try Chrome today and having read this thread I checked Task Manager and can say that Chrome has, by a large margin, the least memory usage of any of the aforementioned.

I am using the memory saver function on Chrome, which apparently frees up memory on inactive tabs, which may make a difference.

I've been using Microsoft Edge based on Chrome since it was introduced and have been quite pleased. I switched from Chrome to Edge. I think Microsoft got this one right.

It usually does, I've found the reverse is that most all programs that work on Win10 also work on Win11.

In the past, when I was still doing PC tuneups and repairs, I have removed Chrome from many PC's.
In every case, it got on a person's PC and tried to just take over. And the poor customer didn't even know what it was or where it came from.... just like a trojan or Virus.

I still won't let Chrome anywhere near my PC....Any of my PC's. Except one laptop....where I installed Chrome for experimental purposes.
I wanted to add a line to my Cleanup.bat batch file, to remove the Temporary Internet Files created by Chrome.
This line does the trick:

Del /F /S /Q "C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache\*.*

That line, can be run from an elevated command prompt, or in a batch file. I prefer the batch file.
Now that I know it works, I may remove Chrome from that one laptop.

Cheers Mates,
TM
