Good afternoon, all.

I have a DIY gaming rig that I built about 7 years ago. It's finally starting to show it's age and it's performance is a little less than desired lately. I want to run diagnostics on this machine myself to make sure that I am going in the right direction. In other words, I want to know if I just need to get a new video card, or do I need to start over. Is there any software or even internal programs I can use to run diagnostics on my machine and see if anything (mother board, chip, video card, etc) needs to be replaced and upgraded?

Thanks.

In addition to the things already mentioned, dxdiag will list the capabilities of your graphics hardware.

The tools mentioned can tell whether your Windows install is corrupted, but they won't tell you about performance.

Looking at your specs' the weak link may be the GTX 1060. That was a good card in its day. Unfortunately, better replacements (like an RTX 3060 or 4060) are a little expensive ($300US, new).

Make sure to execute Chkdsk C: /f command from Command Prompt.

Scan your computer for malware infection using Malwarebytes.

Important Recommended Steps
• Update all installed applications
• Uninstall currently installed device drivers and then install the latest version of the devices drivers.
• Install all the Windows important updates.
• If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't know what it is, you probably are not overclocking.
• Use SpeedFan to monitor temperatures in computers, overheating can cause BSOD.
• Use Memtest86+ disc to check system memory's (RAM's) for errors.
• Use HDD Diagnostic Tool to check SMART health report of the hard disk drive (HDD).
• Use Prime95 to stress test your CPU
• Use 3DMark to stress test your GPU

I'm not a system builder but doesn't the ASUSTeK ROG STRIX Z370-H have hardware diagnostics testing in its bios?

Thanks everyone, I have enough to start on.

@bogkn, I was thinking that, but I wanted to be sure that everything else is fine before I plunk between $300 to $500 on a new card.

@glasskuter, you're probably right. I still have the instructions for the board, I'll give it a look.

Thanks again!!
