The Samsung Messages application will be discontinued in July 2026. Upgrade to Google Messages as your default messaging app today to maintain a consistent messaging experience on Android.

Switching to Google Messages​

Depending on your OS, you may receive an in-app notification from Samsung Messages to help guide you through the process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the switch. Please download Google Messages (if needed) from the Play Store for the latest features and best experience.

To switch to Google Messages manually, please take the following steps:

1. Open or download Google Messages. The first time you open the app, a message appears: “To use Messages, make it your default SMS app."
2. Tap the ’Set default SMS app’ button.
3. Select Google Messages. Google Messages is the white icon with the blue conversation bubble.
4. Tap ’Set as default’.
5. Google Messages is now your default messaging app.

I know preferences and all that but I don't understand why people wouldn't like google messages.

Every time I look at samsung messages it looked like something from 2009

Google messages is very fast and simple, its uncluttered if you want it to be.

A lot of people aren't into high tech and like the simplicity I think. I wonder if the Samsung Keyboard will remain as an option?

should be fine. Keyboard has no reason to remove the choice. I just think for samsung it made no sense to make their own messaging app when they were really the only odd one out, everyone else was using google messages.

Didn't make sense to maintain and keep updating it, especially with rcs support updates being more frequent now. Wasn't worth the cost

Also they can still download the dozens or more other messaging apps out there if they want. But it makes no sense to use one without rcs support.

I switched over to Google Messages about 10 months ago as I was told this was in the cards. What I have learned in that time is that I much prefer Samsung's messaging app over Google Messages.

I will say however, that there is one positive aspect to Google messages, that is, I can now send and receive messages, (using my Verizon account) with my Wi-Fi only Samsung Tablet and my Windows 11 laptop and desktop computers.

confused.. i ALREADY have Google, I didn't know it. The link says it does Not work, but it is already installed. on my Samsung S23. i never looked at who made it.

I did on my first 3-4 Samsung Galaxy smartphones..
S7, S10, S21+, then on the S24+ it came with Google Messages.
I have been with Google Messages every since I figured out how to setup notification tones in it..


I use the Samsung Keyboard too..
I like the font in it... Google's Gboard keyboard sucks in that way the font sucks..

Not as simple as Samsung messages.
I can turn off all but the audio alert on Samsung msgs., which is what I want.

Same with Gmail... overdone.
This is my email. Just has what I need and nothing else. Gmail is a cluster frick.

Me... I like "basic".

No one does... "intuitive" any more.

Yeah, I had that too. It seemed like Google Messages did not play with the phone link app as well as the Samsung Messages did.

You know... you will be forced to find a new message app soon if you use Samsung, as that is going away. That is why I just went ahead and made the change now, before, the drop-dead date.

Gmail is easy to be pretty clean. I find it funny you show aol which is notorious for ads in the inbox. If you don't like gmail you probably have all the categories turned on. To turn off the Promotions tab and other tabs (Social, Updates, Forums) in Gmail, go to Settings > See all settings > Inbox, uncheck the undesired categories under "Categories," and click Save Changes at the bottom

So can I.....you can make each contact different as well if I want. I have some contacts make a sound, some vibrate and make noise, some silent, some just vibrate. Lots of choice....You can even bubble conversations.

It is because microsoft does not have rcs implemented in phone link.

Microsoft issue, not google messages. This will change soon as samsung messages is now dead.

Also no need for any of this, go to messages.google.com and they are all right there.
