Install it on your phone, and on the Windows computer you want to backup to.
Prior to installing the Windows app, I used to restore Samsung phones wirelessly from the cloud. Backing up to a computer makes the job much easier.

AS I only recently got a Samsung phone, I tried it. It works, but having tailored my selection of stuff to back up, which worked, I now see that when I run it again, any choices I made are lost, so I have to select them all again - a right pain. But nice to have a local backup (I don't like the 'cloud').

I can't say that I've noticed whether selections stick or not.
I'll take notice next time I do a backup.

Google backup also ignores WhatsApp. You have to export all your chats from the old phone. I learnt this when I factory reset this phone.

I have other messaging apps, and they all back up.
WhatsApp seems to be a special beast.

This is a WhatsApp issue. Chats get backed up to Google within the app.

EDIT: I've done backups thousands of times, kids, the wifes, my own and friends phones and even restored backups many, many times. Good thing is that it warns about WhatsApp.

It has always been like that.

Total non issue as whatsapp backs up it chats automatically to selected backup account.

Whatsapp is designed to be backed up, so if you delete it, or even reset phone, everything is recovered.

Well, when I did a Google backup and reset my phone, all chat history was lost.

WhatsApp backups to Goole Drive will never occur unless you turn them on and then choose daily, monthly or weekly and the default is off. In my chats page, I don't see any contacts until they message me.

Yeah, by default WA backups are not enabled.

What comes to Message history not displaying for you in a restored WA is beyond me. I have history showing up since over 10 years ago. I have gone through tens of phones since then.

You don't. WhatsApp is a mobile app first, where your account is tied to your personal phone number. The desktop version is just a client that lets you read the latest messages and give responses. It even requires you to have WA on your phone ready when you do the initial login and link it to your phone/account.
