Screen timeout and sleep treated the same for lock/sign-in on modern devices?

Been trying to replicate behavior of my old laptop on my new one, with no success so far. It's worth mentioning that my new laptop has a newer intel CPU that doesn't support S3 sleep anymore, and is subject to the horrors of modern standby

Essentially, the goal is when my screen times out (and goes blank), it won't be asleep, but when I move the mouse or whatever, I want it to send me back to whatever I was doing, without a lock screen of any kind. However, if I physically put the device to sleep, I want it to prompt me for a password.

The issue is, both screen timeout and sleep are both considered "away from device" states, and as a result either prompt or not prompt a password collectively, but they have to be the same. I don't want to type my password in if just the screen times out, but I do want it to ask for one if it wakes from sleep. Kind of a no-brainer, but somehow doesn't seem to be possible from my experimenting so far

Is there a way to work around this? Perhaps a utility or something that'll lock when sleep is triggered

Welcome to ElevenForums, @ResourceBaron

I think that I have an answer to your issue, I just need to find it in my notes. I'm fading fast (it's 1:30 AM here) so if I don't find it right now then I will respond back in the morning. I just wanted to reply right away so that I have a reminder to look at this in the morning.

and then also set screen off after whatever interval you want or set blank screensaver and Uncheck box for lock when active.

I found my notes, but they are not helping me too much right now. Either the behavior has changed in the last year or year and half since I last tried this, or it is simply behaving differently now that I am trying it on a machine with Modern Standby.

There were some advanced power settings that only become exposed when you create a registry entry. I thought that this would get you what you wanted, but I just tested it and it did not work as I expected.

I'll look at this further in the morning.
